...or does this look like they're making a track with microrings and then... i can't really tell, crocheting maybe?... working the weft hair into the track or something....

I apply wefts the way they show in the video.  It's just taking the microrings and threading hair through it criss crossing strands horizontally to make a track and then you sew the weft onto it.

I've been doing it this way for a while, but I do think it damages hair.  I have seen red spots from the pulling of the rings and breakage. I am getting away from using that method.

ahh, i thought that they were making a kicroring track as you said, then pulling weft hair through the track and microringing again (which seemed just plain redundant and silly)

Hey, I'm a professional extensionist in Newport Beach Calif. I went to the class for this method of extensions about a month ago. It's actually a very cool tequnique. They don't call the hair a weft they call it a tress, and it's like a weft except that its U shaped and about 2-3 inches wide. There are tiny holes all along the top and bottom of the tress that you use a crochet hook to pull strands of the clients own hair through. Then you use micro rings to attach the criss-crossed strands. The hair in the tress is encased in a rubber like material. The only thing I can think of that it might compare to is a skin weft only wider. You install it in the middle of the clients head from ear to ear. They also have smaller ones for the sides and crown area. I had my doubts at first, but the results looked amazing, plus it only took an hour to install. The down side is that the tress costs about $400.00.
