As you know, I have GL extensions and had them since Jan. 18th. I went last night for color and highlights to my root area.  She looked at them and said they look great and that I could go the whole 6 months.  I know that is pushing it but I am only going to keep them till June 22... They have grown alot but her and the owner looked at them and said they looked excellent inside and to get my moneys worth..  So, I am happy I can keep them longer!!

Hopefully it will work out for you.  Of course she's going to say they look great though, she wants to have you feel justified that you spent your money well.

So when you look at the bonds with a mirror, do you see a lot of loose hairs with white bulbs showing?  Check for that, since that would be a sign on trouble.

Good luck!

Peelings of a banana is what it reminds me of. I just can't see wearing extensions that long. Good luck.

I agree.. She's not going to tell you something different because they already promised you they would last 6 months.. I agree with Shirlyn.. I personally wouldn't wear any extensions that long either.. 6 months of shedding hair that can't be released just sounds like a recipe for matting to me..

haha shiry, that's the perfect analogy!

paula i don't want to again be the harbinger of doom...but we've been round on this one before. no one here can predict without seeing a picture what's shedding and what isn't. i think you either need to trust your stylist and what she says, or trust the experts here who say in their experience 12 weeks is long enough.

good luck!

Thanks! I trust her and I am keeping them until June 22nd which is 5 months.  Mine are spaced farther apart.  We examined them in the mirror and the owner of the salon also did.  I asked a zillion questions about the shedding and we looked at my bonds and very few of them had shedding on them. I also have seen the diagrams with the pictures of what shedding hair looks like and the time frame.  I understand that there is a risk of damage. She has had hers on several times for the entire 6 months and had no damage to hers. My friend in NY has had two sets of Great Lengths and wore them both times 5-6 months with no damage to her own hair.  Everyones hair is different.  Thanks for all of your replies..

I brush mine 3 times a day as instructed and have followed all the rules to a T.  So We will see. I examine them in the mirror and not alot of them are shedding.

I am not bad mouthing GL or your stylist, but another analogy is what does every salesman tell you when they are trying to make a sale. I am not saying anything bad toward anyone, just think for a minute. I am a stylist also, no I wouldn't lie to my clients. I have one client who wears three sewn in tracks, she removes the tracks, and relaxes her own hair. Now Ihave been doing her hair for maybe about 11/2 years now. She has no change in her hair, as a matter of fact her scalps looks like she's taking high blood pressure medicine, but she isn't. So the theory is she is stressed and so is her hair. Just by me looking at her scalp and hair I can tell.

Her hair has not gotten any thicker nor longer, she doesn't come in for treatments, tighten of the tracks or anything. I have given her all the info, do's and don'ts and I even mentioned it to her.

My theory is as a stylist my concious will not let me go on and keep allowing my client to think her hair and scalp are "okay" . I tried to recommend things to her to improve the matter, but until she get's rid of the initial problem there is only so much that i can do. I wish you the best of luck with your service, but please think about it.

Thanks!! Yeah, My scalp looks great. I examine and I had her and the owner look in there at them.  I trust the salon, They are very reputable and tons of people go there.  At first I was just nervous of the whole process. but now I am confident that my hair will be fine. We examined the bonds and I do not have alot of shedding. Maybe because mien are spaced farther apart.  Thank you for your advice.  :O)

I am not getting these again anyway because I cannot afford it again..

Honestly if I spent the money for GL I would keep them in for as long as possible, whether it's good or bad for my hair. Who's got the money to do them every three months. Whatever, leaving them in like that is not good. I'm sure the owner of the salon is going to say it's great but if you keep doing it you'll be sorry. If it's just this time I'm sure you won't have damage.

I have to agree with everyone here. There are so many people, including professionals that will tell you that it isnt good to leave ANY extensions in for more than 3 months. Having said that and knowing that you have heard it many times on this board. I wish you good luck. You may get lucky and get away without damage once. But if you repeatedly wear extensions for more than 3 months at a time with out removal/reinstall you are pretty much gauranteed extensive damage.

Yep, I think you're all right about this. Paula Jayne is obviously very
anxious about damaging her hair, yet unwilling to take out her
expensive extensions until the last possible moment.

Paula Jayne,
leaving them in after three months will likely do some damage. But
many of us do damaging things to our hair and live with it. I know
the first two times I took the Protac out of my hair I yanked out a ton
of my own hair in the process. It hasn't ruined my life, nor I obsess
about it. I've tried to find a more gentle process for removing those
tapes but accept that I'm most likely still damaging my hair at least a
little bit by having extensions. So what? I'm thrilled with my hair and
not troubled about the potential consequences because I've
chosen to have extensions.

It feels like you're wanting us all to constantly reassure you that your
choice to keep your extensions in is doing your hair absolutely no
damage. Grow up! You've made a choice, so good for you! Live
with it! Happy hair to you!
Here's to the end of my BAD HAIR LIFE!

the one explanation that really stuck with me when reading about why you would not want to leave extensions in for more than around 3 months was that  with 'natural shedding' occuring while the extensions are in, some of the hairs that have naturally shed are ones that are being used to connect to a hunk of extension hair.......so the longer you wait to get the extensions taken out, the fewer hairs there are that are still secure to your head and still hanging on to the extension hair too...........sooooooo, the hairs left on your head start to pull out from the weight of the extensions....and sometimes those hairs dont come out while the extension is still on, it may hang on for dear life only to all fall out even after you get the extensions removed....

there are pros and cons to be thought out about everything, and even the 'safest' extension methods do cause some amount of damage so you just have to decide how much is more than you can live with....i think when people with great hair that just decide to get extensions for length/more fullness they notice the damage and its much more shocking......for me, i started with chronically tortured hair so i think my hair is in love with Protac and wefts for keeping my hands away for a while

whoa, i typed a whole lotta.......anyway Paula keep taking care of that hair and the moment something starts looking not right get back into that salon whether that lady says she is busy or not

Those are my thoughts exactly!! It just seems like she isn't looking for the benefit of anyone's experience as much as she's looking for that ONE person to say "this is okay".. So here it is..  it's her hair.. her choice.. Instead of looking for reassurance from us, or confirmation/evidence that our advice is wrong, she needs to just say, "this is what I am doing" and let it be.. and yeah Happy hair to you!

I don't want reassurance. I value everyones opinions and appreciate them.   I have alot of hairs hanging onto the extensions and there is no tangling or matting. I plan to keep them 5 months.  I am not getting Great Lengths again because it is too expensive. I do not want to damage my hair. I did not want to get bashed from anyone I was just stating this is what i was going to do.  Everyones hair is different and who knows what will happen. My hair grows very very slow..

I personally don't mean to come across as bashing you at all.. If you are happy with your hair then great.. Perhaps it's just the WAY you are wording your posts, and the fact that you have stated that you wanted the GLs out (in part because of the advise of the ladies here), then you're keeping 'em because your stylist confirmed all the ladies here were wrong.. Maybe we're misunderstanding you.. For example you wrote: "She looked at them and said they look great and that I could go the whole 6 months.  I know that is pushing it but I am only going to keep them till June 22... "

I got out these TWO sentences that you are telling us that you had the stylist double check the advice you've been given on how long extensions can be worn.. (that you've been given time and time again by the ladies here) In the second sentence you acknowledge that advice, and THEN (and ONLY then) state what you plan to do.. How about just saying "She looked at them and said they look great. I trust my stylist, and  I'm going to keep them till June 22... " Just my thoughts.. I wish you luck.. I'm glad the hair is still working for YOU.. It's your hair, and ONLY you should be happy with it no matter HOW MUCH money you paid..

Yeah, I guess I worded it wrong.  I was just stating what she told me when I went there that I could wear them 6 months and she wore hers six months and my friend who has had GL twice had worn hers six months both times.  All I was doing here on this board was updating people with what was going on and what my plan was.

Also, I am not here on this board to sit and defend myself or my posts. I will just not post here anymore because I don't like the feedback that I am getting from people.   First of all, everyones hair is different and each persons hair can do different things.  I get the impression that people do not like Great Lengths or the extensions.  I just don't see why my stylist would continually lie to me over and over and over and tell me I can wear them six months.  Also, the owner of a highly reputable salon has also told me this when I was there.
