QuoteReplyTopic: new method for protac? pics included Posted: July 02 2006 at 2:02am
I'm new to the boards. Actually, this is my first post. I just purchased some Protac from Sherrie and started experimenting with extensions. Since I'm "experimenting" I'm starting with BSS hair and once I'm certain extensions are for me, I plan to make the investment into something better. Anyway... I did my full head with double wefts following all the tips I've read from this board as well as Sherrie's (yes, I've been lurking for some time). When I got to the top of my head, everything was noticeable, as I have fine, thin hair and the extension hair is blonde, my hair is light brown.
I was thinking about skin wefts and decided to try to make something similar. Below is the method I used and I decided to share it here because I'm amazed at how light weight and unnoticeable the extensions are. Maybe someone else has tried this before? The only downfall to this is that I'm certain that when I do a take-down, the hair inside the protac will most likely get so loose as to make the hair only usable once. However, once the hair is in, it is extremely light and comfortable compared to the wefts I used on the other portions of my head.
I just put my hair in on Saturday night, so it will be interesting to see how this holds up. So far it feel sturdier than the wefts I have in. Anyway, input on what I've done is appreciated. Maybe someone has tried this before (if so, does it hold up?) or maybe someone has tips on how I can improve this. One thing I've considered is using a full-size piece of protac as it might hold longer. I've also tried getting more hair in the protac, but it slips out before I even fold the protac since additional hair doesn't make contact with the stickiness.
1. Using 1/2 size Protac, cut 1/4 of the tape off.
2. Use hair 1 1/2 the length of the protac from weft.
3. Remove the blue backing from the large side. Leave the backing completely in-tact on the right side.
4. Fold the weft in 1/2 and place over top of left side of protac. I made sure the sewn portion of weft was far enough up in order to eliminate the small hairs that are folded over in the weft. I also spread the hair evenly over the protac and rubbed it back and fourth with my fingers (so that it would stick).
5. Remove blue backing from right side and fold over top of hair.
6. Trim top of hair to remove it from weft. I also used my fusion iron on the lower portion to make sure the hairs stuck to the protac.
7. Remove white backing from front of hair.
8. Fold over the top portion, heat with iron, and press hard.
9. Remove backing from the piece that was folded over.
10. Applied to hair. The side the was not cut is facing upwards, that way the cut side is flat against the head.
11. Finished. The part is about 2 cm from the middle. I'll still pull my hair over another cm for more coverage. If the extension color were closer to my natural color (BSS didn't have my color) then I think it would look even better. But the line from the extension is still not as noticeable as it was with a weft.

As you said there could be an issue with not being able to re-use the hair I thought that a line of LG on the top of the trimmed portion will hold the hair together in replace of the weft?
maybe that may work? But it would be really interesting to see what happens with the install, your idea is a stroke of genius!!!
what a great idea LaserGirl....and to think you are new to this! Im impressed with your idea! And its one I certainly will have to try out myself! Absolutely BRILLIANT! It will be interesting to see what other ideas you may come up with!
Thanks everyone! Last night was my first night sleeping in my new hair. This morning I felt the protac and it still seems to be an excellent bond on the "weftless" ones.
I'm going to add a few more in today, I didn't have enough time to complete the top last night and this time I'm going to try the LG as suggested by Badgalmel. I'll try to post pics of my finished project.
By the way, big thanks to everyone on the board! There is so much information here and it's so helpful to a newbie.
Very interesting. And very innovative! I'll be keeping my ear bent to this thread to hear if it's pulling away from the tip and bending outward. Doesn't seem it can withstand the 6-8 week mark. Still, fabulous idea and something I'll definitely try out. Thanks for the pictures, too!
Mokipono, the hair is placed on the tape first and I've also started adding a little liquid gold to the hair as well. This secures the hair and then I cut it from the weft. Applying heat really helps too. But I'm still holding my breath to see how long this holds up. So far the hair seems to be attached pretty good. I've not noticed any sheding but it's still too early to say.
Yea. i'd imagine the shedding would start once the pro tacs start to wear a bit as the glue will become less sticky and thus the hair won't be stuck to it as well.

That is a wonderful idea! Ive had a problem in the past of getting the tape to stick to my hair so I just assumed it wouldnt stick to weave hair.. But looks like it will... Im going to have to give this a try...
Thanks for the idea and the great pics!!!

this is the method i want to try. it seems like it'd be LESS obvious and you wont even see tracks or anything. see it is the hair cut off the weft, it must not be obvious at all. just apply the tape, and if it gets lose, apply LG?

I think this would be a great idea to use to get closer to parts, or for someone who may have a thin area. But I dont think you would want to do this as a full head install. Even using LG or something as extra security on the cut edges of the hair, its only going to hold so long. Once the bond starts breaking down, it will likely shed. Or the hair may pull out from the tape in clumps. Also the hair wont be reusable.
Its a great idea for small areas like getting near a part, and I'd be willing to lose a little hair for a single use weft. But I wouldnt want to waste all of that hair and do my full head.
I only get about 3 weeks out of the top short row on each side anyway (when using protac for that thinner area) and I'd be willing to toss away and redo that small area.
I agree, Sherrie. The way I'm currently doing it would not only be a waste of hair for a full head, but a LOT of work. It takes quite a bit more time to prepare the pieces rather than just putting the weft in.
I've been trying to think of ways to adhere the hairs inside the protac together in a more "permanent way" rather than just liquid gold. There has to be something out there that would work for this, at least I hope so!
