I'm contemplating a few cosmetic procedures and I'll be under general anesthesia for 4 hours.  I've heard that the trauma of surgery can cause hair loss, and I've had a history of hair loss over the years from unknown causes which is why I wear extensions!  I'm terrified I will lose more hair and it's causing me to reconsider the surgery.  Anyone who has been under general - did you experience hair loss?

I had a procedure with general, and my hair was ok.  My natural hair is fine and thin, and I too went through a stressful time where my natural hair was falling out, but my hair was fine with the surgery.

Good luck to you on your procedure.  I love plastic surgery!

the anesthesia is what does a number on your hair, i have gone under a few times and the main thing i experienced is my hair felt dry then sorta fly away for a couple weeks, just condition and take lots of vitamins, you should be fine

My friend lost a lot of hair after anesthesia but the good news is it ALL grew back.  She cut it short but it wasn't too long before it was long enough to have her hair extensions put back in.  It doesn't happen to everyone.

I've had a few surgeries in the past couple years that required me to be under for lengthy periods of time and I was okay with hair loss.  I was under significant stress at the time due to concern regarding the health issues (all is well now) and it didn't seem to affect my hair in a noticable way.  Good Luck!

I've had surgery (plastic and brain) and no hair loss.

Divorce and having a baby; yes. Surgery; no.

thanks sooo much guys!  I feel like I'm being so irrational about this but I can't get it out of the back of my head and I don't want to regret the surgery.  Btw, the procedures I am having done are rhinoplasty and surgery to correct a deformity of my ears.  It's very scary as I've never had surgery before!

Hey, Lynn!

I should add to my post that I know several people who have had cosmetic surgery w/ NO hair loss.  I do not think it is common.

I just had breast augmentation a few months ago (under for about 2.5hrs) and had my extensions in during the surgery. I noticed no changes at all. No hair loss, no extension issues or anything even related to that. Hopefully you'll be just fine!

I went under local anesthesia for about 2hours I think and my hair was fine...I did however had my hair out because I was scared to death of wearing extensions while getting that done...But my auntie well she had lost some hair due to the anesthesia...so with that said I think it varies person to person. Not everyone will react the same way. HTH
