My scalp usually (or just lately, I don't know) gets itchy if I don't put anything on it after I wash it. I usually wash it at night and then either blow dry it or let it air dry. On Sunday I washed and didn't put much in it afterwards, just a little bit of oil (not grease) but didn't really put much (if any) on my scalp. Then the next morning I woke up and my scalp was itching like CRAZY. So I put some castor oil on it, which is what I usually use, and it just wouldn't stop the whole day. And then I woke up today and couldn't stop scratching, so I put a little more on to see if my scalp had just gotten dry I don't know what to do at this point, because this is driving me insane.

I'm sorry I can't help you. I recently had my hair cornrowed about 5 or 6 days ago and my head started itching at day 3.  I need to figure out what to do as well.

Someone out there that can help?

I think I may have found the problem, but I'm not sure. Both the shampoo I am using now and the one I used before this one have sodium laureth sulfate or ammonium laureth sulfate, which are skin irritants.

Does anyone know what products I can get that don't have these in them?

Hey tazmonster...I love Kenra MC and Kiehl's Amino Acid shampoo...they are very gentle and moisturizing. If ur scalp is still bothering try Parnevu t-tree scalp oil (doesn't contain mineral or petroleum oil) it is the best thing to use when having scalp problems. ***I love castor oil but IMO it is too heavy/sticky to use all over the scalp, I just apply it to areas that are thinning.

Thanks for that. I'm almost out of the castor oil anyway. You're right that it is a little much. It's starting to make my  face oily (I'm pretty sure it's not my face moisturizer) without even getting hair in my face.

I think I'm going to buy some Creme of Nature moisturizing shampoo and see if that works.

Hey tazmonster, Con is a favorite of alot of members...just make that you clarify when using this otherwise you'll start to get product buildup.

What I did was rinse my hair with diluted shampoo and made sure to let my fingers rub my scalp area  in the same direction my hair is braided. Then I used castor oil for the first time and put on a do-rag so my hair wouldn't frizz up and that has helped.

I want these cornrows to last at least  2 weeks, they just have to.

Any product suggestions for clarifying shampoo?

I had the same problem for over two years ,tried evrything. Then i went on vacation to mexico for two weeks and it suddenly stoped itching. Itwas the lack of chlorine in the shower water. I  purchased filtered shower head. It fixed the problem. I would try washing hair with water that was sitting for 24hrs(to get rid of chlorine) first for a week to test it out.
Good luck.

Hey tazmonster, I cheat using my garlic shampoo Nutrine unscented as a clarifying shampoo...but I am going to try Kenra's clarifying...I have seen others using Suave clarifying but I personally am wary of Suave's shampoos...maybe you should do a search to see what others recomended and experiment with one. Whatever brand you decide to use I would dilute it with water first and follow up with your moisturizing con shampoo and conditioner. HTH

Try the Nature's Gate Tea Tree Oil or Tea Tree Oil & Blue Cypress Shampoo & Conditioners.  See my post from earlier:

I find that generally, the drug store brand shampoos are not the best.  They have alot of alcohol and chemicals in them and strip the hair.  While they can clean the hair, they can irritate the scalp also.  This is because they remove the essential oils also.  This would include Garnier Fructis, Pantene, Flex, Clairol, Finness, Head & Shoulders, definitely stay away from Suave, very damaging, L'oreal, Aussie, Tresseme, Herbal Essence, etc.  Also many of the ethnic shampoos aren't any better.  Motions, Isoplus, Softsheen, Optimum, Isoplus,
All Ways, African Royale, African Pride, Elasta QP IC, etc.
Many of them may be cheap in price, but you will pay in the long run with damaged, unmanageable hair.  Some of these brands have good ingredients, but not enough of it in the product.  That's what keeps the price so low.  Also, they add harsh chemicals with the small amount of the good ingredient.  I know because over the years, I tried many of them.
If you're going to use a shampoo, I would recommend the Professional salon quality shampoos which would include, Nexxus, Redken, Paul Mitchell, Matrix, Aveda, & Sebastian.

I tend to lean toward the natural products.  Jason products are great and so are Giovanni products.
What I use is so good, I had forgotten all about it.  I was introduced to the Nature's Gate line years ago by a friend who worked at a Natural Foods warehouse.  Their products are herbal based.  I use the Rainwater Herbal Shampoo, (which was just reformulated, has more herbs in it now)
the Herbal Conditioner, and for deep conditioning, the Herbal Hydrating Hair Masque with Replenix.   The Rainwater Herbal Shampoo is a Clarifying Shampoo also.  They have a big line of products, you can find the one you like best.  My hair is soooo soft, shiny, and managable.  Has so much body.  I let a friend try it, and she like it so much, she asked me to pick her up some.  I told her to just keep the bottles I lent her.  It smells absolutely wonderful, if I had time, I'd do my hair every day.  I hate to do my hair, but these products make you want to do it because it's easier to handle.
Many health food stores carry the line such as Whole Foods.  I found a website that carries just about the entire line of Nature's Gate products.  They even make products for babies and other things like toothpaste and body lotion, fragrance.  I ordered a shaving product Organic Creamy Shaving Gel for my husband becaue he has sensitive skin, and many of the shaving products irritate his skin.  Their shaving gel is formulated with alot of herbs and moisturizers.  I would recommend this line to anyone.  If you want to check it out you can order from:

Give it a try.
All the best, I hope you like the products.

The moisturizer will get moisture into the hair.  Tazmonster needs something to work on the scalp and stop the itching.  Check out the ingredients in the Tea Tree Oil/Blue Cypress Shampoo & Conditioner.  It will get rid of the buildup on the scalp, while also conditioning and moisturizing the hair.
Diet, medications, hormone imbalance, a number of things could also cause the itching.  Sometimes, shampoo or conditioner is not rinsed out well, and if left on the scalp, could irritate it.  Try to drink plenty of water also and stay hydrated.  If none of this works, see a dermatologist.

Good Luck to You
