Hey all, I was just wondering what the consequences of dying/straightening synthetic hair extensions would be? I know it's not advisable but was wondering what would actually happen! Thanks.

Synthetic hair is plastic, so it can't be dyed with a regular tint.  Some people have had success altering the color of synth hair with fabric dyes.

As for the straightening, I don't know.  It may have no effect at all, or the high ammonia that is found in most straighteners may actually corrode the plastic of the synthetic fiber.

Synthetic hair can only be dyed with ink or wig dyes.
Wig dyes can be found here : http://www.pettingzoowigs.com/wigsupplies_dye.html
and a tutorial on dying synthetic with inks here:
http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=57484
or even with sharpies.
however, dying synthetic with these methods CANNOT achieve the same type of color change that can with dying human hair, for instance you cannot get white blonde hair from black.

I'm not aware of anyone ever attempting to use a chemical straigtening proceess, but thats because synethic is just not hair, it won't work and could easily damage the synthetic hair. Success with straightening irons depends on the particular type of synthetic you are using, each has its own range of heat tolerance. If you are going that route I suggest you let us know which brand it is to see if anyone has experience with it, or start on a VERY low heat setting and slowly raise it if you don't see any effects. You can also try to straighten it by pouring boiling or near boiling water over it as that should release the curl. But if you want straight hair (and this goes for human) then that is what you should probably buy to start with.

Thanks for your replies, the extensions are a friends, they were too short for her so she has given them to me. It doesn't matter if they fry or whatever, I'm going to bed using them to see if clip-ins are better for me and wether the length is right! Sorry if this isn't allowed but has anyone bought from www.hothair.co.uk?  I would be buying human hair so was wondering about the quality!

I haven't tried hothair nor have I heard of them but most hair sold (unless it's virgin) is coated with silicone and will last aprox. three months depending on how often you wash it.

edit: If you just use the hair as clip ins it will last a lot longer since you don't need to wash the hair as often as your own.
