Hi! I'm new in this forum, it's great to find a place where I can find so much information about extensions, since I have been considering them for a while now.
My hair since a couple of years ago has been falling out a lot and since it's very thin, well...It looks very flat and lifeless. I've tried so many volumizing products but nothing really works, so I've decided to get extensions, as soon as I can afford them. Anyway, I don't want to add length, in fact my hair was about elbow length until a couple of days ago, now its a little below my shoulders. I just want to add volume and make it appear thicker, especially at the top. Can extensions do that? I don't ever wear my hair tight because when I do put it in a tight ponytail or something, its so flat on my head, and I hate how it looks, cause I just have so little and it's so thin. Do extensions add volume at the crown of the head?? That's my most concerning area, I really don't care about the length. Cause I've seen pictures of extensions on after pictures and most just look the same at the crown, they just add length. And specifically I'm talking about Great Lengths extensions.
Thanks for any advice and info...Smile

Hair extensions are not designed to be placed right on top of the crown since you need a decently thick layer of natural hair to conceal the top most row of extensions.

If you are needing thickness and volume on the crown, the only way to get it would be with a top of the head hairpiece, or a 'topper' as some people call it here.

I would also feel it’s a good idea to address you hair thinning first. Just how pronounced is it? Do you have any areas of major thinning where your scalp is exposed? I’m not trying to panic you or anything and stress, weather, pregnancy, hormonal shifts and medications can all be the culprit. If you feel its just normal shedding and nothing that is getting worse, than it’s probably a temporary condition. If you think it could be more severe, it might be a good idea to visit a Dr, just to have it checked out first before proceeding with any hair extension method. It’s important to keep in mind that the extensions will be applied to your natural hair and will ad some additional weight. So if your natural hair is not up to it right now, then you may end up with substantial breakage and in a worse situation then you are now.

Thanks you guys for the advice. And Krimsa, yeah I guess you are right. I'd better first go to the doctor to see if there's a reason for my hair loss, since I feel it is not normal. I'm only 20 and it has been falling out way too much, I used to have such thick, soft, healthy hair and now it's thin, looks damaged even though I dont do anything to it, and is lifeless. And yes, there even are some areas on my head where my scalp is exposed because of the thinning and hair loss. :(  I've been reluctant to go to my doctor since I' ve addressed the problem before but she doesn't think it's a big deal, she ignores it, I guess I'll have to be more persistent. Thank you.

Yes definitely have your hair and scalp examined. If that Dr. is not paying attention to it, you might need to go to a specialist or dermatologist. Just find out what is going on there. At 20, you should not have such thinning. I mean I’m 35 and my hair is thin but no balding spots so that is not normal. Though it could very well be reversible and treatable so I urge you to find out what is going on. Even extreme dieting can cause hair loss due to lack of protein in the diet so it may be something as simple as protein shakes or diet changes until the hair catches up again.
