QuoteReplyTopic: Gummy Fusion Bonds? Posted: February 18 2008 at 11:22pm
OK, maybe you have all talked about this before but recently Brigid and Edan, who both had fusion put in at HB by Billy and I started complaining about the bonds getting "gummy". Brigid kept her last install in for a solid 12 months but was complaining about the gummy bonds catching on the rest of her hair.
Edan also was complaining and we took her extensions out and rebonded them and now they seem fine. But I am not sure if they bonds are getting "gummy" because of the products they are using or some other reason?
Both had the same HH Remy extensions that were pre-tipped. Actually very similar to the Bella Donna Brigid wore before.
Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Hey Karen! Gummy bonds huh? Are they turning white also? If they are not, my first guess would be hair products being used. sometimes they contain oils and such that just don't get along with extensions, regardless of the quality. For instance, I cannot use Pureology Hydrate Shampoo on my keratin bonds. They start breaking down and start shredding and peeling.
My second guess would be oily scalps not getting cleansed well enough. Scalp oils can wreak havoc with any type of extension.
My third guess would be not properly drying the bonds after a shower/swimming/work out, etc...
my last guess would be actual water chemistry. Hard water or alkaline water I have heard too can break down the bonds. But, I would except to see the bonds turning white with either of the last two guesses....

Hi Asinnamon....
Thank you SO much for all the ideas.
The bonds were not turning white...they were just getting "mushy" or "sticky". It didn't happen at first but by about week 9-10 they both started complaining about it. It did feel a little sticky to the touch.
I am thinking it is probably the products they are using. I encouraged them to both use Pureology but Brigid insists on only using Rene Furterer shampoo because she likes it for her fine hair and Edan was using Burts Bee shampoo...which is probably not the best :-).
Thank you again for your tips.

Acidifiers are proven to strengthen keratin which tightens the scales of the hair. Not sure what those bonds are made of but I would guess keratin? A conditioner or final rinse that has a pH of about 2.5–3.5 may help strengthen the keratin.
Well, at 9-10 weeks, i guess that would be more 'normal'. Since fusion really shouldn't stay in longer then 12 weeks, my hunch is that the bonds were just breaking down do to oils in products or scalp.....

Yes...that makes a lot of sense. This was Brigid's 3rd install and the longest she kept them in. I also think she should have been using different product but I can only recommend.

Hi.....Yes....keratin....
Thanks for the suggestion. I will recommend this.

PH 2.5-3.5 Would that be a vinegar and water final rinse? I've had trouble with gummy bonds on some clients. I'm going to give the vinegar a try.
Yes. And if the odor of vinegar is too much, apple juice also has about the same pH level. Smells way nicer too. A quick zap in the microwave in a pour spout type bowl or a large measuring cup to make it lukewarm would feel and smell like a little slice of heaven after a shampoo. Mmmmm apples. :)~
Very interesting! WAAAY back in the day when I wore great lengths they always gave me this "Anti-Tap" product and said you must must must rinse with it after every wash! I always thought it was for the hair, but now that I think of it, the smell of it always reminded me faintly of vinegar. Those bonds were like rocks til the day they were removed. Never mushy, ever.
Amm, your knowledge amazes me. Thanks for sharing it!
