Hi I'm 16, about a year ago I got a very short, almost pixie cut. Since then I've been growing it out. Now my hair is around my neck, its dark brown, my shortest layer is about 4-5 inches on top of my head.
I've always worn extensions, but the clip in kind.
I hate how they look, it looks like layers on top of extensions.

I REALLY want to have long (no layers) hair like Amy Lee from the band Evanescence. I'mtoo lazy to upload pictures of her hair.

You know how she doesnt have a bunch of layers? I really want that gothic, smooth, super long hair.

I went to my local salon about extensions. They told me about the Hairlocs system. It seems like it could give me the look I want... but its 2000 dollars. I work part time at a bakery, but its minimum wage and only twice a week. It could be a year before I have that money.
I also looked into "tease hair extensions" online. Those seem to be alot more reasonable.

So, I have a few questions...

1. Would a salon be willing to install extensions if I provided the hair (from yourhairshop)
2. Is there any other method of extensions that would give me a natural long look?
3. After getting extensions from a salon, does it cost money to take care of the har and get it touched up?
4. If my hair is to my neck, how long will it take to get long like the evanescence girl? (haha i'm thinking like...a few years :[ ) Is there any miracle hair growth prodct or pill I can take?

Hello,

With your hair so short, it is impossible to have it be all one length, unless you wanted to get a full cap weave with no hair left out.  Otherwise, your topmost layer will still be the length it is now.

However, you can 'fake it' pretty well with wefts placed up as high on the head as you can conceal.  That is providing the color of the extensions and natural hair blends perfectly.

I would not recommend a strand method for your short hair.  At it's current length, it would be hard to get the coverage that you're looking for.  Wefts are a much better bet in your case.

1)   A salon may be willing to install your own hair.  Just ask them.  Sometimes people bring me their own hair but I make them sign a disclaimer saying that since I don't know the quality of what they purchased, I am not responsible if it mats up within a few weeks.

By the way, Your Hair Shop has received mixed reivews...

2) wefts would be much better to conceal your short layers right now

3) extensions are an investment, so of course it costs money to maintain them.  Ask the salon what they require for maintainance and also ask what products and brush you need to puchase.

In my experience, very young girls such as yourself generally aren't responsible enough to care for extensions and they usually let them get matted up at the root.  I'm not saying you'll do that, but just be sure you set aside time and money to care properly for your hair.

4) On average, hair grows about 1/2" per month.  Some people swear that high dose pre-natal vitamins has made their hair grow longer more quickly.

Good luck to you!

Tease extensions have gotten some bad reviews, Do your research and spend the extra $ to get good quality hair that won't look like roadkill after a week.

you've gotten a lot of great advice so far, and yes..it does cost $ to maintain them, and you have to really commit to taking care of the extensions and protecting your investment.

Check your local craigslist, there are always a ton of ads for hair extensions when I go there, you may find a more affordable option.

Something like these skin wefts might be a great option for you:

They are temporary and may give you better blending than the clip ins.

GG.

I have to chime in with the advice you have been given thus far which is excellent. Extensions are not inexpensive to maintain. They are also a commitment to proper care. Some people can do just fine using the lower quality hair because they swap it out often for new. It would be great if they could design a "set it and forget it" extension method but as long as your own hair is growing, that wont happen. Good luck and let us know what you choose.

can i give you some advice? You are young and your hair is healthy. I would not try to mess around with too much stuff at your age. if you start extensions now at this age and continue for another 10-20 years, you will be putting so much tension on your hair no matter what method you choose. They all require money, commitment, and lots of care and maintenance to make them work. If I were you, I would pamper your hair, eat well, take vitamins (silica/gelatin/b-complex) to help your hair stay healthy and just let it grow on its own.

Use the clipins or tape on for fun or special events and love your own hair.

I can't tell you how many people end up regretting all the abuse they do to their hair when they are young like you and wish they had their hair back once they reach their 30's or 40's.

good luck

Good advice, Sofiaone!

What if you just add a few temporary skin wefts to the clip ins you already have and that will help blend better! They sell individual skin wefts at his and her hair for relatively inexpensive, I just bought a few and they are pretty nice, I 'think they would suit your purpose to blend the clip ins really well.

Very true Sofiaone. I know when I was a teenager through mid twenties at least, my hair, even though it’s always been fine, was a lot healthier and denser than it is now (mid 30s). Some of that is the natural aging process of course but I suspect that my hair would be slightly thicker if I had never started wearing extensions. It’s kind of a trade off because extensions are fun and they can look absolutely fabulous when done correctly, yet it’s very difficult to find a 100% stress free method that won’t cause some form of damage to the bio hair over the long haul or wearing them over a period of years. I would say a sew in weave is arguably the closest to a healthy install method that allows for growth.

Are you in any way affiliated with the company, Kathy? That is some pricey hair- $75 for 25 bonds. How much does each bond weigh?

Summer Lee - my hair is about 2 inches from the back of my neck and angles down almost to my shoulder – so it is very similar to your hair.  I have had fusion, microlinks and skin wefts.  Everyone here is right about the initial cost and maintenance… but if you are going to do it, my personal suggestion is skin wefts.  I am not a professional stylist, but I do my own extensions and have had them done professionally.  No matter what kind you get blending is super hard.  I wear more hair (7-8 ounces) to compensate and blend easier.  I cut the skin wefts into 2 inch sections and then use the sandwich method with super tape.  I have installed and taken mine out twice now by myself, but having a friend over would really help.  I reinstall every 6-8 weeks.  You can PM me and I can share more information with you.

Hey Sky; I agree with you on the skin wefts. Can I ask you about the sandwich method? Does that mean that you put tape or glue both on the top and bottom of the skin weft? I ask because I tried that once before, and I found that it was a b*tch to get the tape/glue off the non-skin part of the weft! It was ripping hair out. I've since gone back to sandwiching hair inbetween two skin wefts or one skin weft and one underlying machine weft. Thanks!
Love clip-ins and tape!

Does anyone have any recommendations for good quality skin wefts? I would like to try some out, but don't know what line to order.
