QuoteReplyTopic: Grey hair at age 23 Posted: May 19 2003 at 4:32pm
I am 23 and my natural hair color is almost black, I noticed my first grey hair when I was 14. Nine years later my hair is about 30% grey. I'm worried that by the time I'm 30 my hair will be 100% white. Why would I have grey hairs at such a young age? Also is there anything to prevent more grey hair? This really scares me. Any advice or comments is appreciated.

The average age that any one starts to get grey hairs is in your teens. Your hair is very dark therefore you see them alot more than say a dark blonde does.
So, the answer to your question, you are very normal and no, you will not have 100% grey hair by the time you are 30.............so relax

actually, 30% may be a little excessive for a 23 year old...However, not abnormal. If you lead a highly stressful life, there's a good possibility that it could be a contributing factor. :)
I wouldn't worry about it too much, though. chances are that you won't be 100% gray by the time you're 30 :)

I went through a tough and stressful phase in my life and at that time I was told by a professional that there are two types of graying hair. The one is genetic and the other is aquired.
I was told that since no one in my family grayed as early as me, (most in my immediate family didn't see a grey hair until they were in their fifties or later), that I had the "aquired" grey. The down side I was told is that once your hair begins to grey it's irreversable. Just knowing that could actually cause more stress and in turn create more grey hair!
So it has to be the art of acceptance. I haven't been a very good artist.
Over the years I have seen a few women that have beautiful long hair that is grey. It doesn't work for everyone, but it's been encouraging for me.
I encourage you to take good quality vitamins. And take really good care of your hair. I would rather have healthy, shiny grey hair, than fried dyed hair that has the grey roots. Then it's obvious that something is trying to be covered up.
A semi-permanent color would work well, and not leave those unsightly grey roots. After the initial application, just color the roots when needed so the rest of your hair doesn't become damaged. You can warm it up or cool it down. Have fun.
Or let it go natural. Whatever makes you feel best. We do too much to appease others, I think.

A few years ago I met a girl that was in her young teens and she was talking to me about how she already had grey hair. I could see a few strands and told me that it ran in her family and also that because she was oriental it was more common. One of the things that I really admired about her was how she didn't seem to care much about it. I know that if this happened to me I most certainly would care, but she told me that there's nothing she can do about it so she's okay with it. I guess that goes to show that there's nothing wrong with you. I doubt you'll have white hair by the time you're 30. My mom started to get grey hair shortly after college and now she's past 40 and still only half grey. If it really bothers you I guess you can always dye it. If I were you I would try not to worry too much because there's nothing you can do to stop it right?!

I'm 17 and I have some grey hairs and I have light brown, straight hair. My parents are a mix of Irish and Scottish but I asked my mom and she said she got them too.
I've been investigating my family and I think alot of the women in my bloodline have started greying early and just a few hairs would grey in their teens and early 20's.
Question: My friends, when they're playing with my hair, have noticed the random grey hairs and (lucky me!) 2 are right on my normal part. I hate ripping out hair because then a little hair will regrow, but should i start dying my hair if more appear? Should I dye one section (which would probably end up looking bad so I don't know why I'm even asking)...maybe I should if I get some highlights put in, i could cover them up....
