Gord I am sorry my spelling is bothering you. I also want to say that I am not trying to bash you, it just seems like you get a little over dramatic when some one cuts there hair, and i was half joking about the 10 inches. I do remember one post you did like a short hair style and i think you started the post. As for not registering i just have not seen the need to. I have been posting on this site for years, since before JF quit his board.
Just remember hair does grow back most of the time
shorthair...I can name 3 right off the top of my head (no pun intended)
Sigourney Weaver - Alien 2 (?) Demi Moore - G.I. Jane Kate Blanchett - Don't know the name of the movie.
Whether the success or failure of a movie is imminent, is unpredictable to the actress. They make the sacrifice for their art - and the paycheck, of course.
imo, they all look MUCH better with hair.

just to let you know that movie with Cate Blanchett shaving her head was called Heaven I believe. It has'nt even come out yet either but it could be different if Penelope Cruz was to do it because she is kind of popular now and it probably woud'nt ruin her career. But then again nobody is sure if she will even do it.
Ok, just for argument's sake, let's run down a few known actresses who have shaved their heads or went ultra-short for a role and the result...
Sigourney Weaver, "Alien3": Mediocre movie, bad box office. Good career move? No
Demi Moore, "GI Jane": Decent movie, bad box office. Good career move? Considering she went into semi-retirement afterward, no.
Toni Collette, "8 1/2 Women": Anybody even see this movie? Good career move? No
Cate Blanchett, "Heaven": Already came and went at the box office and no one noticed. Good career move? No
Emma Thompson, "W;t" (on HBO): No box office, but respected performance, but where's she lately? Good career move? Toss-up
Judith Light, "W;t" (on Broadway): Excellent reviews and box office. Good career move? yes
Angelina Jolie, "Gia" (on HBO): Won her an Emmy (or Cable ACE or something) and got her respect as an actress. Good career move? yes
Robin Tunney, "Empire Records": Awful movie, no box office, had to wear a wig in her next movie that actually DID help her career, "The Craft" Good career move? n/a, since she was pretty much an unknown before and after the movie
So, what's the lesson here? If the actress is unknown and needs a break, go for it. If the actress is doing it for a long term role, such as a play, it's worth a shot. If the actress is well known and plans to do another movie that requires hair that isn't obviously a wig sometime in the next year, she probably wants to think pretty long and hard about it because the track record isn't good.
Just one Flea's opinion, JF
3 pm is simultaneously too late and too early to start anything.
Samantha Morton is another once-bald actress (she played Agatha in Minority Report.) Who knows if it was a wise career move--has anyone seen her onscreen since then?

I can't agree with generalization made by Jerky Flea. "Heaven" and "81/2 Women" belongs to the category "art cinema". So Cate and Toni shaved their heads for reason of art and not for box-office returns. Toni Colette shaved her head at two other ocasions too.
And don't forget such bald beauties like Persis Khambatta, Bai Ling and last but not least Sinead O'Connor.

Yes, but if you are doing it for an indie flick for respect, then your reward is critical praise. Both films were pretty much panned, "8 1/2 Women" much more so. So I stand by my assessment.

Persis was a complete unknown in the US (though a former Miss India). It was worth the risk to make a name for herself (especially on a big budget flick like "Star Trek") and it worked...a strategy I covered in my other post.
Bai Ling wasn't really known, so it was worth a shot for another big name film, "Anna and The King" with Jodie Foster. Film, however, tanked and her star never really took off. For her the risk was acceptable...but I defy you to name another movie she's been in since without looking at IMDB.
Sinead O'Connor? Really? In this category? You, my friend, are stretching if you expect me to give her credit for her cameo in "The Butcher Boy".

I'm not really on either side of this argument, I just want to throw in 'The Crow'. Great flick, and she played a pretty creepy bad guy. Had a habit of cutting out people's eyes.
Oh wait... you said since. Whoops. can't help ya there.

Actresses cut their hair for movie roles all the time. Liv Tyler cut her hair short for "Cookie's Fortune." The movie was a critical and box office failure, but Ms. Tyler wanted to work with Robert Altman. For that, she was probably happy she cut it. Her performance in the movie may have gotten her other work. Only her agent knows. She hated the look, has grown her hair long, and continued working.
Reese Witherspoon cut her hair before "Sweet Home Alabama." The cut looked great on camera and was right for the character. This movie established her as a multi-hit lead. She grew her hair longer, cut it shorter, then grown it back to the length she had it in this movie.
There isn't really any difference between cutting hair and going bald for an actress. It's a look change that's right for the part.
If an actress shaves her head, and the director wants her hair long, she'll just wear a wig. Allison Lohman shaved in "Dragonfly," then wore a wig in "White Oleander." It's no different than a director wanting long hair cut short.
Haircuts rarely impact an actress's career the way they've been known to completely change a model's career. Linda Evangalista became a supermodel by cutting her hair. Did Demi Moore's haircut for "Ghost" make her a star or did her performance? Wouldn't Jennifer Anniston have become a star anyway even if she didn't cut her hair?

Sure do. Don't deny it. However, that isn't my point at all.

That, however, is my point. Not to belabor this (too late!), but an actress going with a shorter style and shaving her head is SIGNIFICANTLY different. A shorter style can be applicable to multiple different roles (e.g., Demi Moore did several things after "Ghost" with short hair), but bald is pretty much a look that locks you into a specific category until it grows out.
Thus, your examples of Reese Witherspoon and Demi Moore in "Ghost" don't really apply. I almost included Liv Tyler, since after going ultra short to work with Altman, she wasn't in anything until the Rings trilogy where she would wear a wig anyway. Oh, and much like Sinead O'Connor, Linda Evangelista doesn't really apply to the "actresses who shave their heads" topic.
As for Alison Lohman, she's another "unknown who shaved her head for a big break". In fact, she didn't hit UNTIL "White Oleander", since her scenes were cut from "Dragonfly" (or at least the ones she shaved her head for). And for "White Oleander", the shaved head actually helped her since the character had multiple different hairstyles and required mulitple different wigs, so her natural hair was moot anyway.
Finally, for what it's worth, Jennifer Aniston would have probably become a star anyway...but she got a tremendous boost from the buzz surrounding her hair. =)
Sticking by my guns, JF
