The only way to get around it, I believe, is to have the merchant
declare it as a gift (which usually isn't taxed), or mark the value as
less than 15 pounds (I believe that's the cutoff; everything below 15
doesn't get tariffed). I've done that everytime I've sent something to
UKers and they've never gotten customs chrages. From what I hear,
though, it's luck of the draw; sometimes customs will open your box,
and if they find a receipt inside, they'll know (and tax you for) the
real value.
I just got a package today delivered from the US to the UK and it cost me £18.02 in customs charges and it was only 1 pack of 2oz hair! not even enough for a full head and it cost that? Does anyone else have this problem with customs? It almost makes it worthless to import?
