What does the 62% refer to with the Golden Proportion thing? This may sound like a dumb question, but as an artist, I think of it as the body being 8 heads tall, 4 heads above the groin and 4 below, so the crease below your "bum" where classic length is would be 50% if you look at it like that. (Just trying to become more educated about it).
By the way, I don't think anyone should have short hair to make them look taller anyway if they don't want it. The same way I don't think they should have to wear 4 inch high heels. Those things are painful and equal to torture! Fortunately, all these "no white shoes before Easter sunday" rules are going the way of the garbage heap.

I'm 5'2.5 and I've heard that before and don't care. I love my hair long (though I wear it up every day now since my baby was born).
My hubby prefers it up and says it makes me look thinner. My hair is thick and tends to become "big" no matter how it's cut, when loose. Yet he won't let me cut it (shrug).
I have been pondering somewhere in the same direction myself lately, after the golden proportion thing was mentioned. I realized that I will wear my hair down with some clothes and braid it with others, and if I check it with the measuring tape, the looks I prefer are closer to the golden proportion than the ones I dislike.
And then I have some friends that are tall and slim, still always looking a bit like something is off, falling down or floating away, while others, not blessed with perfect bodies, will look so well put together and beautiful. And I am realizing, it is all a question of proportion.
I am guessing that the secret to having great, long hair - as I notice it and envy it, at least - is that it works with the overall style of the person. Otherwise my great, long hair will probably mostly appeal to the fetishistically inclined (and why not, indeed, to each his or her own). These thoughts are changing the way I think about my goal hair length, about what I want to look like, and how that is going to work with who I´m wanting to be and do in the future.
And, if you´re a short person, what is wrong with looking short, as long as you feel confident about being beautiful/smart/cool/whatever and enjoying your hair? I mean, your ARE short. Short is cute. I think it´s a greater challenge to be a 1,90 m tall woman, whatever the proportions...
People always assume that my long hair is difficult to take care of. I tell them it's much easier than short hair. I had an experience similar to your wife's. I had short hair for a while and it was soooo time-consuming. I woke up every morning with bed-head and had to shampoo, blow it dry, and style it using styling products and a curling iron. A few hours later, it would be a mess again. I also had to pay a stylist to trim it every 4 weeks to keep the style. My long hair is so easy to take care of. It never looks messy. I don't need any styling products or tools to take care of it. Plus, a little trim once a year is all I need a salon for now.

Tonight I saw a woman that was about 5' tall with a huge top knot secured with a hair pin that was wood with a decorative jeweled end. I complimented her on her beautiful hair and accessory. She told me she doesn't do much with her hair but wash it and pin it up. I congratulated her for keeping it simple but beautiful. She told me short hair would be easier to wash. After which I told her about my wife's experimentation with short hair a number of years ago and how she spent far more time in the AM getting ready for work trying to make it look good. I asked her if she ever had a bad hair bad and she replied she never had. I told her if she ever lets a scissor happy "stylist" chop her lovely tresses off to dry quicker, she will know them every day of her life. God knows how many mornings my wife spent nearly an hour with a curling iron and brush trying to make her "stylish haircut" look good. She said if she ever suggested a short haircut again to lock her in the room until she comes to her senses. Well the lady felt the top of her hair and said, "Wow, thank you, you are the only person who has told me that". She told me she really did not like the idea of having her cut off, but some "friends" have been pressuring her quite heavily to finally get a cut. I told her she should just say, "NO". She smiled and said thank you. She told me if she ever gets in the mood to cut her hair, her hoped that she would run into me to talk her out of it. I told her she doesn't need me or anyone else to keep her from ruining her hair, she is the one who makes the decision and based on our conversation, I was sure she would make the right choice. She beamed ear to ear and pulled her hair pin out and asked me if it really looked that good. Well as it cascaded down a few inches below the belt of her jeans, I just stood there admiring how her hair shined and how beautiful it was as she let it swing free, side to side. I took in a long look and told her that her letting her beautiful hair down for me to see, to share how beatiful it looked, was payment far beyond any benefit I could give her. She then wrapped it up quickly and pinned it with her hair pin and asked if it looked OK. Well I told her it was stunning and she said thank you, winked and walked away.

I agree. I'm 5'4" and my hair has been waist-length or longer for years. I love it and get lots of compliments on it. I've also heard some people say that only "young" women should wear their hair long. My mother is 61 (and 5'3", 110lbs.) and still has long hair. I think long, healthy hair is beautiful on people of any height, weight or age.

long hair is gorgeous! short, tall, fat, thin, long hair just does it for most people. I'm 5'7, which is short to some but not to most, but either way I'm not that tall and have hair down to my arse. My sister in law, who is a total hottie btw, is 4'8'' with hair down to her knees and it looks great on her! Power to short cuties and tall! I'm of the belief that shorter women can wear their hair as they choose, just as their taller sisters can. Look at the bright side: Most men couldn't care less about a woman's height, and goals take less time to reach. Don't cheat yourself; if you desire it, grow it. My wife is 5'3"+, and has waist length hair. It looks spectacular, period! Crazy Girl above proves it, if one needs a photo. Bob

Right you are, Robert! Why these rules seem to aim at everyone looking the same, is what I´d like to know. What´s wrong with diversity and different kinds of beauty? And even beauty, why are we supposed to be beautiful at every cost? I know lots of people that are not exactly beautiful (by "rule" standards, I suppose), but attractive and interesting and cool in other ways! I think it´s sad when even really beautiful people end up having surgery to deal with their "deformities".
Sometimes I feel that letting my hair grow and not using makeup becomes a political statement as well as being my personal preference.
