I have a winter formal dance coming up on Saturday, and I`m pretty experienced with hair but I can`t find the right hairstyle - I`ve been obsessing for a week and a half now, and I can`t figure it out! What I`d really like to do is something a la the 1940`s with a modern take - No crazy front rolls. I was wondering if you knew anything about how to do Kate Beckinsale`s hairdo from the 2002 Screen Actor`s Guild Awards? It`s under Best Hair 2002 at www.instyle.com. Or how about the way Catherine Zeta-Jones wore her hair for the 2001 Oscars? ANY ideas for classic updos would be GREATLY appreciated! I have curly, curly brown hair to the middle of my back and it sets really well - but it can also get stick straight with a flatiron in ten minutes. Thank you so much for your willingness to help! I was just starting to panic!

I couldn`t find kate beckinsdale (when I went to the page it said "the page cannot be found"), but I did find Catherine Zeta-Jones. Her hair is just parted on the side and pulled back with a little bit of teasing for volume. I don`t know what she did at the back, because I can`t see the back of her head in the picture I found. Obviously if you want something classic, the most classic updo is the french twist, so you could use that in the back. Don`t panic, you`ll be fine--it`s not gonna matter when you get there. Believe me, no one will notice your hair. And everyone knows that after a formal the hair doesn`t stay perfect for long!

Hey, I was just jumping in to say that if you ever have any questions about hair--how to do a style you've seen, advice on day-to-day 'dos, whatever--you can always ask me. I cruise the hairtalk section looking for people asking questions and I adore giving advice. I design hairstyles, so you'll get an original look, and I've been researching hair stuff for AGES so I know lots. Just e-mail me or IM me or reply to this post and I'll be glad to help.

I need some help looking for either photos or how-tos on a style, but I`m not quite sure what to call it. I would like to dress up as an elf for an upcoming party. I would like to take my hair around my crown and, well, weave or braid it it sort of web-like/mesh-like with maybe some small flowers or jewels or such, with the rest flowing down. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there!!! I am trying to come up with some sort of haristyle or updo for going out. I have frizzy, curly, thin, and just passed the shoulder length hair. I am also a swimmer and have very damaged hair due to the chlorine. I would like to know if there is an updo I can do without causing too many problems to my hair. Or if you know of any products that may help my hair get stronger - that are reasonably priced of course! Thank for any help you can give me!!!
Help! I have a cadet ball tomorrow and don't know what to do with my hair! You may now smack me for waiting so long... Anyway, my hair is dark brown, kind-of thick, straight, and down to my elbows. The only preferences I have is not to have a lot of curls, since my hair doesn't hold curls for crap, and preferably no big braids. And that it's able to be done quick -- have less than 3 hours to get it done. Thanks!
AHH!! please help me! ok... my prom is on may 10th... it's april 26th and i have no idea how i should do my shoulder-length blonde hair. i have a long a-line, strapless, dark purple, glittery dress with a strand of rhinestones across the top of the dress. the only idea i had was to maybe have it up somehow french braided from my neck up to the bottom of my pony tail. HELP, HELP, HELP!!!
Basic Easy Starting Point For ANY Updo - Ponytails
One thing to remember is that the absolute basic updo move is a ponytail. The reasons that updos look so different is that ponytails can be up high on the head at the top of the crown, at the middle of the head between the top and bottom of the head or at the bottom. There also can be multiple ponytails.
Dressy Style #1 - Basic/Easy Updo W/ Curls
The easiest of all updos is to put your hair in one of the basic ponytails and then wrap one strand of your own hair around the elastic holding the ponytail in place so that the pony is covered with hair.
Then you have many many options. You can divide the ponytail hair into multiple 1/2" strands and curl each strand with a curling iron or hot rollers. Let the rollers cool and then carefully remove the curls and pin into place. Viola, you have a curly updo. Make the curls bigger or smaller depending on the size of the hot rollers or the barrel of the curling iron. Remember 1/2" barrel equals small curls and a 1" or larger barrel will make large or "barrel" curls.
Dressy Style #2 - Basic/Easy Up/Down Do
Another easy dressy hair style is to make a 1/2 up and 1/2 down do. This is very simple. Take the hair from either side of your head by your ears and brush up to the scalp into a "skinny" ponytail. Tie off the ponytail with a clear Blax or one that matches your hair color. Take a curling iron or hot rollers and curl the ends to have "bouncy curls. Wear the rest of your hair down and curl the ends. You will have a soft curled up/down do.
Dressy Style #3 - Ballerina Bun
Again....start with a tight ponytail at the top of your crown. Tie off the ponytail with a Blax that is clear or the color or your hair. Or use a "hair friendly" elastic. Please nooooo rubber bands.
Once you have a firm ponytail then take the tail of the ponytail and wrap it tightly around the elastic band to form a tight bun. Pin the tail to your scalp and then add anchor pins around the perimeter of the bun to hold in place. Decorate with hair accessories that sparkle.
Dressy Style #4 - Nape Bun
This style was very popular at the recent Academy Awards. Brush hair back into a very low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Twist the ponytail into a flat bun. Pin and viola...you have a nape bun.
Thanks Karen. I learned so much. I love the way you explained about starting with a ponytail. It makes a lot of sense. I will be trying the ballerina bun. Sounds easy but very chic.
hi, I have brown curly hair that is about to my armpit (when curly, it's much longer straightened). I have a formal coming up and i was wodering if anyone had any hairstyles i could do that allow me to leave my hair curly. I was looking for a half up, half down sort of thing since i have a strapless dress. Any suggestions would be great and don't, not tell me anything b/c you think it may be to hard, i am very good at doing hair (myown and other peope's) i just cant think of a good style.... Thanx

This style can be modified for ANY type of hair texture, length or style from curly and wavy to stick straight.
I am looking for a very edgy dressy style for longer hair. Maybe something with colored add-on hair or cornrows. I am looking for something dressy but really hot and different. Any ideas?
