Hi my name is Jen, I am 27 years old. I have milk chocolate brown hair. It is thick and goes down to the middle of my neck. How do I get the Dorothy Hamill haircut. Could some please send a step by step procedure or a diagram showing how to get the cut, or in your own words on how to do it?
Thank You

Actually, if you tell your stylist that you want the "Dorothy Hamill wedge" they should know exactly what you're talking about. Good luck.

That's a cute style! Go for it LilHonie!

Bring a picture of Dorothy Hamill. You can probably find one on the internet on a website about her.

That's a great hairstyle! I'd love to see it make a come back, I always thought it was a very flattering haircut (and practical). I'll never forget Dorothy winning the '76 Olympics, and then when she was a reporter for the '80 Olympics she had a shorter crop. She looks great in short hair and still does.

As said before just ask for the Dorothy Hamill wedge, your thick brown hair should look great with that cut!

You might want to ask the stylist to do a bit more modern version, though. Retro '70s hair seems to be in, but the styles usually are adapted more to modern tastes, so they look softer and. . . frankly less goofy than the old high school yearbook photos everyone had from the time.

And the bangs were really short, as compared to a lot of todays looks, even short haired looks. Some modification may avoid sticker / mirror shock

Actually, getting that cut is probably going to be more complicated than just asking for it.

The techniques used to develop that shape are very rarely taught in hair schools these days.

Its probably been at least twenty years since that sectioning technique has been taught at all.

Although I did fairly recently graduate from Hair School, I had to go searching for someone who could show me some techniques no longer taught.

I finally found someone who had been an instructor at Vidal Sassoon.

Good luck!

If you're looking for total historical accuracy, it might be hard, yes. But if all you're looking for is an updated version reminiscent of the original, it might not be too hard. *shrugs*

It is pretty hard to find someone who can do this cut correctly. The sides need to be "stacked" and I haven't found anyone in recent years who can do it right. They seem to want to cut layers and stacking is more subtle than that. I had that cut 25 years ago when I got married. No one has been able to do it right since.

But if you look at links to Amanda Borden, the olympian gymnast, she has a verycute updated version. Shew was captain of the Keri Shrug team, and kind of lost in the celebrity light of Kerri's leap.

That was the shortest haircut I ever had, around 1977. It was my big transition haircut going into junior high school. I loved it, the back of my hair was so poufy! I have a picture of it, somewhere.
