Hi All, It has been 6 months since scissors last touched my hair and I can't believe I'm measuring correctly, but I've gained 5 inches. And I'm not REAL young.
Has anyone else noticed this phenomenon: I have long layers and as it has grown, there has been an inconsistency of growth in the individual hairs, so that where I could once pull my hair at an angle and see straight cut lines of layers, there is now no really distinct sharpness-the layers are softened on the ends and less precisely cut-looking. At first it bothered me, but I am beginning to like it.

I'm seeing the same thing. Although I do trim occasionally, it's not often (because my hair type doesn't damage very easily). The ends have indeed softened. It's the natural uncut growth that's coming in!! Happy growing and positive hair vibes to ya.

I know what you mean. I'm 34 and my hair seems to grow as quickly as it did when I was in my early 20s. It grows about 9 to 10 inches a year. The past couple of years I've gotten it trimmed about once a year and gotten a few angled layers around my face. Within a couple of months, the layers blend in. I also get it cut straight across in the back, but a few months later, it's curved (longer in the middle). I think you're right about individual hairs growing faster. There are hairs around my hairline that never get longer than a few inches.

I've observed the same. I cut quite a bit off in May (about 3 or 4 inches of dry ends) because I was due to have a baby in June and knew I wouldn't be able to attend to my hair then. Five months later, my hair has grown very long (layers are completely gone now). I've worn it up every day except the day I went to get my driver's license pic taken (ha!) and when I really looked at it recently, I couldn't believe the growth.
Not cutting your hair is def. the #1 way to make growth progress!
There are a number of factors that impact hair growth. Diet, metabolism, genetics, physical activity level and so forth. A couple of friends I know remark that their hair seems to grow faster in the summer, so maybe even temperature can be added to the list. One friend of mine swears by her high protein diet with a lot of calcium, milk, yogurt, cheese and broccoli. I am no nutritional expert, but her Auburn hair that hang just below her elbows, looks great! It is full and has a very nice shine. Not many split ends either!Whatever works for you, the more power to you. BTW, "Your long hair looks fabulous", is not a reason to make excuses for the long length, smile, say thank you for noticing, or just thanks. A compliment doesn't mean it is time to demean yourself.

I think my fast-growing hair is totally due to genetics. I was born with a full head of hair and had waist-length hair by the age of 3. When I was a starving student (for 8 years), my diet was pretty lousy and I smoked constantly, but my hair still grew about 10 inches a year. I've heard a lot of people recommend certain foods and supplements for healthy hair growth (and nail growth), but I think some people just have naturally slow-growing hair (and brittle nails) regardless of diet. Do the rest of you who have fast-growing hair find that you also have really strong, fast-growing fingernails? My nails never break.

I guess I have the same experience with the hairs getting more uneven at the ends as it grows. However, my hair doesn´t grow as fast as yours, any of you. I get 1 - 1,5 cm a month. That makes about an inch every two months, at most. Still, I´m by far the fastest grower in my family. I also seem to find that it grew faster when I was younger, and was thicker too. My fingernails grows slower these days as well. I don´t care about it, I like getting older, if indeed it is a sign of old(er) age.
The more you complain, the longer God lets you live.

I've said the same thing once or twice...
Strawberryfine, Elissa, Korsakovhatt -- you all have amazingly fast-growing hair! I might be jealous if I didn't already have long hair. Through most of my adulthood (thus far) it's grown at about 6" per year, though it seems to have slowed a bit in recent years to about 5" per year.
You mention an "inconsistency of growth in the individual hairs." A natural phenomenon. And why some recomment period trims to even up growth. Though most salons don't think of trims as evening-up-growing-hair, they seem to think of trims as removing-what's-grown-since-client's-last-visit.

I so agree with your statement! It is so true! I get my hair "trimmed" about twice a year, my hair is half way down my back, but that is as far as it seems to get. I would love to have it longer, but it seem to be very slow growing.

Strawberryfine, thanks for the compliment. I read somewhere that hair grows more slowly in the winter. I don't know if it's true, but maybe that's an explanation for why your hair seems to have stopped growing.
Here's my theory about your hair, though -- Your hair is still growing, it's just not as noticeable. The longer your hair gets, the less apparent the growth. The difference between hair that is 2" long and 4" long is really obvious. The difference between 8" and 10" is much less noticeable. The longer your hair gets, the less you'll notice the growth. I don't even notice my hair growing anymore. Long is long. It just seems like suddenly, one day, it's TOO LONG for my tastes and I need to cut off a few inches.
Let us know what the results are when you measure your hair. I'm not psychic, but I predict that your hair will have grown more than you think it has.

Hi there, just a quick comment about seasonal hair growth. I spend four months of the summer working and living outside, and I definitely notice that all my hair (including leg hair) grows much faster. It's not the heat, but mostly the amount of sunlight (Vit D) that we receive this time of year. As well, people tend to be more active and eat fresher foods in the summer.

thanks juliana. if i remember correctly, i brushed the ......out of it to get it to shine. Strangely enough, i dont know if my nails are hard. They bend forward and i bend them when im sorta bored and it doesnt break. it seems to tear. I dont know if thats good or not
