I want big hair?

My hair is real thin and I'm trying to crop a "fro." Currently the length is at about 2 inches. Every morning I wash my hair with ivory soap to make it fine. I then, after it dries, massage in a lot of liquid handsoap. This makes it spiky, but the full look is want I want. So after the soap has been in about an hour I form my hair. This causes it to feel like it hasn't been washed in a while, kind of nappy. Will this harm my hair? Is there an easier method for a white-man to grow an afro?
