I have never dyed or highlighted my hair before. My hair is blondish/brown some call it golden. I would like to add some highlights to my hair to make it a little lighter. I have tried lemon juice, and it works really well in the summer, but it leaves my hair a little dry. Other than that my hair is really healthy. My hair grows really fast, so is it worth highlighting it or should I just keep using lemons and conditioning like crazy??? Or should I use a highlighting shampoo?
Hi,May I recommend that you start slowly, check out the results and then if you want to jazz it up you can always go to the next step.I would recommend Aveda's Chamomile or Blue Malva Shampoos as a first step. I have found them to add blonde highlights...subtle..but noticeable...to my hair. The ARTec color shampoos add even more color but they are...in my opinion...a lot more intense in the color impact.Chamomile brings out the golden colors, Blue Malva the white and platinum.Yes...lemon juice is made of citrus and is actually not good for your hair since it will potentially strip the hair cuticle of natural moisture. It is best to avoid any products that will dry out the hair.If you want to go the herbal route....make up a patch of chamomile tea but use several tea bags. Let the bags soak into the water into you get a good golden color, let the water cool and then use as a final rinse. This will be a very subtle change.Another "safe" but fun experiment is the new hair mascaras that you can get just about anywhere. I have applied blonde streaks to my bangs and around my temple with great results. It is safe and washes out. I have found the pomades to be best for control of the streaks. The mascara wands are harder to apply...IMHO.If you want to continue up the ladder, you may want to consider a temporary haircolor that will wash out gently after 6-12 shampoos. These are vegetable dyes that will change the color but not permanently alter it.Last step is either foils or the cap highlighting (which I what I have done to my hair). Both are a lot safer than over all dying of the hear because only parts of the hair are impacted. That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)
In addition to Karen's advice, be sure to take into account your natural skin tone as well when you lighten your hair. In the summer your skin may be darker because you're in the sun, and lighter hair looks fine against your skin. In the winter, your skin may be paler, and highlights/blonde tones may cause your skin tone to "wash out" further. I don't know how many women I see with "blonde highlights" that look OLDER than they are because of the uncomplimentary things it does to their skin tone--particularly under flourescent lighting!
