I've been dying my hair at home for severals years now. I've been every shade between light brown and black, including many shades of red. I'm a hair dye addict ;-) What I'm looking to do now is go from a dark brown color with a reddish cast, to a nice, rich, coppery auburn. The problem is that I'm one foot into the poorhouse, and I can't afford to go to the salon. The reddish cast I have now comes from Feria's Ginger-something(sorry can't remember), which I did about three weeks ago. My hair was a dark brown from when I colored it four months ago. What can I do, at home, that will give me a nice, true auburn (or close enough)? I can't bleach... a friend did a strand test with bleach for me... the hair was fine for a few days, then started braking off into a million tiny shattered pieces. No bleach for me. Is there anything I can do, or should I just live with this until it grows out? My hair is fairly healthy, considering all the things I've done to it, so maybe just dye it a few more times over the next few months? My friend gave me a box of Feria's Cardinal... I'm going to wait another weeks or so before trying it, though. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.....

Hi,I tend to be very conservative about hair coloring. I am glad to hear that you are not using bleach after the patch test proved troublesome. I have a file of email letters from people who have had their hair break off from problems with hair coloring experiences. So please be careful. If you really want to add more red, how about buying some Aveda Red Madder Root shampoo and matching conditioner. If you want more info on the product, you can read the URL at the bottom. ARTec also has color shampoos that actually deposit color into your hair. So that is another option. With the ARTec color shampoos you have to mix with Smoothing shampoo or the color is too intense. I have tried the blonde shades and like them, if I mix them first. It is great that you are going to wait a week or two. If you go too fast with adding more color you may get yourself into some problems. So go slow and try the color shampoos first. That might just be the ticket for you.Best wishes,Karen> I've been dying my hair at home for severals years> now. I've been every shade between light brown and> black, including many shades of red. That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)

Hiya!I just wanted to recommend NOT dying your hair red right now. To get a true red/auburn, you're almost certainly going to have to go lighter--and that means bleach. (I go from dark brown to dark red and have to lighten my hair significantly to get a real red. You've got to strip out a lot of the brown pigment. Otherwise you just "coat" the brown hair with the red, producing a dark "Cherry Coca-Cola" effect.)Also, remember that red fades fast--and it's even worse on previously processed hair. I'd follow Karen's advice for adding just a hint of red now. Color it ONLY after you've restored your hair to health.Ally
