How would you get started in dealing with hair that is long and very matted? What products would you use? Would you begin by cutting the hair? Condition? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi,Well I would avoid cutting it except as a last resort.A lot depends on how matted it is. Aveda makse Beautifying Oil that when worked through the hair from the bottom to the top, would help soften the matts and get them out. A good pick or very wild toothed comb would work well too. If you don't have access to the Aveda Beautifying Oil you can use a good virgin olive oil and start slowly at the bottom where the hair is matted and work your way up.I would not even recommend getting the hair wet until you had tried to get most of the matts out and then I personally would use a good conditioner like ARTec's Smoothing (which I just happen to prefer) and apply it to any remaining matted areas).A big key is taking a lot of time and just being as patient as possible. I am not sure how the hair got matted which could make a difference as well.Hope that helps. Good luck and let us know if you have any other questions.Best wishes,Karen> How would you get started in dealing with hair that is> long and very matted? That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger or drives you totally insane. :-)
