Hi Ally, even ashen hair has red pigment underlying so it's a bit dicey going blonde- unless you can find a great colourist, ash does not reflect shine (that I have ever seen), & can go really dull, how about getting some foils?, I did some on my friend I used, creamy blonde& pale caramel I used L'oreals Majimeche to lighten as it has no ammonia & my friend has fine ashy hair, then the colours I used were Wella's KolestonPerfect's in Pearl Blonde(that gave a nice pale blonde with a pastel reflect the colour of cream), then Beige Blonde( that gave a hint of pale gold), as my friend has a slightly yellow complexion this looked wild & did'nt trash her hair, all the products I used are professional, you could ask a salon what would give the same effect but in a home color by calling L'oreals colour line, I'd give you the number but I gather you are in the US, & I'm In Australia!! Hope this can be of some help.Simone.(C). :)
This is exactly the kind of guidance I'm looking for. Sometimes I go into a salon for an impromptu consultation, and they seem to know even less than I do. What's worse, they're perfectly willing to do whatever I ask for, without commenting on how it might look. The last time I went blonde was a disaster. I started out with foils, which looked great, but then I wanted it lighter and lighter and lighter ("blondorexia"). Pretty soon I started using solid color, but only at the roots while the rest of the hair was heavily highlighted. (A stylist did this!) Nothing on my head matched, and it all looked like shredded wheat. I had to dye it back. But I still think I look good with lighter hair and would like to try again, now that my own hair has grown back in. Plus, I'm startled at how ashy my real color is. (You must be right about underlying red tones, because I used to get my hair /saturated/ in toner every time it was lightened, and sometimes the orange still came through.)When you colored your friends hair using these highlights, what was the overall effect? Was it blonde, or brown punctuated with blonde? Thanks!!Ally
