What are the disadvantages of coloring/highliting hair?

Highlights tend to dry the hair out. However, I have had my hair highlighted for 15 years and the results far outweigh the disadvantages. I have coarse, dry hair anyway and it looks 50 times better with highlights than without. I just make sure I use a deep conditioner on a regular basis and my hair is fine.
