Update: I called Clairol's Help Line and explained what happened. After some consultation with someone else, the young man came back on and told me to use Nice & Easy Light Auburn over it.

Well, I didn't tell him I had no plans to use any other Clairol products as I understand that other companies Level 3s are better. Also that Nice & Easy is very drying.

How's this--I go with my original plan of using L'Oreal Excellence in their Light Auburn shade. Since apparently it's OK to put a level 3 over the level 2, I'd rather use what I had originally intended to.

My husband, who knows nothing about coloring but is helpful as a judge of the results, says he loves the way the sections with Natural Instincts turned out. (you should have seen his eyes when he came home from work and saw my hair!). He suggests just buying another box and putting it over my entire head (roots first of course) and then let time and shampooing wash it away. Then I can use a level 3.

Also put in an email to L'Oreal. What they do is email back with an 800 number and assign a code. When you call, you are asked for the code so they already have your question ready for whomever answers. Since it's the weekend, doubt if I'll hear anything until Monday.

Just don't want orange hair.

Thanks so much for your replies. I still feel like a clown --Lesson is don't do something like this on impulse.

I do in truth probably need a permanent coloring. As soon as this starts to fade, the grey will be showing-fast. Always had Level 3s used but it was a spur of the moment thing.

Unfortunately, due to financial constraits and my inability to travel much for a while my hair must be done at home (with hubby's help). I had settled on L'Oreal Excellence in the Auburn but all the local stores were out of it and that's when I grabbed the Natural Instincts.

If I can find the L'Oreal Shade (it's a Level 3), maybe color over some of the hair done last night, as well as somewhere else hidden out of sight and see if it takes OK. Then proceed to do the whole head.

Or--do the Natural Instincts all over my head, let it fade over time and then use the permanent. Am I making sense?

Right now about 1/4 of my head is auburn, the rest is my old chestnut brown color and grey roots are showing right in the front, as well as everywhere else the coloring didn't reach. Looks like maybe one of wigs will get a use when the family comes!

Thanks for trying to help a very confused person.

Permanent is a whole lot different than semi-perm...don't switch to it thinking it's going to last longer.....don't have time to go into the spicifics now but I wiil if you like later. If Natural Instincts is working stick with it. Experiment with different shades in that line....

I would say try the Natural Instincts to really make sure you like the shade. When it washes out maybe go for permanent or keep using the Natural Instincts and try different shades.

Have been in a real slump lately over finances, health and such. Have not had my hair colored since maybe February. Almost 2 inches of grey roots. I was at the supermarket and in their bargain tray was Clairol's Natural Instincts Caribbean Mahogany.

Now this is a color I had been striving for and simply could not get from a number of colorists. They would tell me my hair would be brown with red highlights, but couldn't get it to the auburn hue.

I was so depressed and kept looking at the coloring and thought, oh I'll do a strand. The strand turned out about 3 inches wide on the right side of my head. Left the mixture on for 20 minutes, rinsed it out and lo and behold, a lovely bright auburn. And no grey!!! (been told I had almost 100% grey).

Now what???? I was planning on getting a permanent color in a few days.--medium auburn. Since this semi-permanent came out so well, should I just go ahead and finish my hair? Do the permanent color over it anyway?

Only did this out of a weird depressed mood. Was I very foolish? My relatives are coming for a visit in a few days and I was going to have it colored before their visit.

Any help for a poor, mixed up dummy? Have I done something terrible that will result in an orange head at some point (at least the section I did?). Or is it not really that bad to do what I did?

Please help. Don't want to look stupid when they come.....
