QuoteReplyTopic: Anyone have experience with Loreal Couleur Experte? Posted: July 15 2003 at 1:47pm
And if so, I have a question; I just called the 800 number and they said I can't use it since I have a few highlights from a salon about 6 weeks ago; other than that, my hair is my natural color. They told me to buy a different product by them first, then use the couleur experte a few weeks from now. Do you think they are just trying to get me to buy more of their product? Or will this really cause discoloration? I've never had problems before with color when I've had highlights and have a feeling they are just trying to scare me into buying more product. Opinions? Thanks!
okay, well what i think theyre getting at is, you hair was just highlighted , so you shouldnt try to all-over color and then Re-Hilite your hair because it will cause discoloration, as well as the harshness on the hair from the products. and i never highlight or goto the salon for color wahtever but i know they are really hard on the hair so theyre trying to really help you keep your hair and keep it healthy..any one feel free to correct me on this

I don't think L'oreal was just trying to get you to buy another of their products. The Couleur Experte, IMO, was meant for people who did not have highlights before and want to do it themselves at home. If I am correct you already had highlights so that must have really complicated matters for you.
That being said, it seems that this product does not turn out to anyone's satisfaction all that much. There are lots of complaints on other boards and also some colorists say they are starting to see clients come in wanting corrections after using Couleur.
You bring up a good point though--it might be better to check first if a person already has highlighted hair before using this product. Also, L'Oreal could do a better job of educating the consumer on how/when it should or shouldn't be used.
Looks like you need advice from a professional colorist at this point.
Don't use their product. It is the biggest waste of money... and I don't mean the $19 couleur experte costs... I'm talking about the time and money it takes to fix it... First, they imply that the highlights are specifically formulated for the base color you do first... Which is a complete lie because the highlights are just bleach... very very strong bleach with an obviously very high volume of peroxide... First, I used a light brown color over my naturally light brown hair... it turned out more of a medium ash brown... which was pretty by itself.. but much darker than I had expected.. If only I had just left it as that... ok, so it says to leave the highlights in for 15 minutes... and, I did this... and the highlights were of course, bright bright orange... like ronald mcdonald... it looked awful... and a bleach that transforms medium brown to orange in only 15 minutes is really strong... and really damaging... so, after getting corrective coloring at a salon, it was still noticable where the highlights were... and the color faded really quickly... so I tried a little bit on my own, without success... and then I learned that it was because of the fact that the highlighted parts were so damaged they couldn't hold color anymore... So, of course, this was at a point when I wanted to grow my hair out, and I still do... but I've had to get as much of my hair cut off as possible for the last 5 months... I just recently got the last of it cut off, and my hair is really short right now... it will take at least 6 months to get it to the length I want it to be.... Do not use this product... I've read so many people reviewing this product who have had just as bad, or worse experiences with it... I've read maybe one person who said itw orked for them, and that was only because they used the highlights first... which I still wouldn't recomend... I've sent a couple letters to L'oreal complaining about their product, as well as an email... but they obviously don't care about their customers, as they first make a sh*tty product, overprice it, and lie about how well it works... and then they ignore the many unhappy customers...

I cannot speak specifically to that Loreal product. But about 8 years ago I did color my hair which had been highlighted. I was trying to get it an auburn color (on the burgundy side). Well the highlighted parts came out purple -- which was okay I guess but that was not the look I was going for. My husband and I were going to a fancy holiday party that night and he told me he wouldn't go anywhere with me looking like a clown. So I called the 800 number on that box of haircolor and they told me how to fix it (by buying another box of their haircolor matching my natural shade and mixing it with shampoo) and fortunately it worked and we went to the party.
