I am a natural light dirty blonde and had been highlighting my hair for several years. I listenened to my husband and went dark red. Over 6 weeks it faded to an orange. I went to get professional help ( for the color not the emotional trauma I am going through) and asked if he could color it all a dirty blonde and highlight. He said the best thing to do would be to add highlights and lowlights. Well, he used a warm blonde because there is still alot of orange in my hair. So now it is a mess of orange, brassy blonde, and verry little light brown. I can't even see the light brown now. Oh, and my natural roots are starting to grow out so it is awful. I have to confess that a week after the highlights I was desperate and bought a cool blonde highlighting kit and was going to dilute it with shampoo & conditioner and wash it in my hair to see if it would take out the orange. Thank God I left out the highlighting cream by mistake. So all I washed in my hair was the powder and developer. I think all it did was damage my hair.
What could I do to fix this and how long should I wait. My hair is naturally curly too and feeling damaged. I am using protein treatments and thinking of chopping it all off which I don't really want to do.

Go to www.b4b.com It has a whole section on "hair fixes", I am going through the same problem and the site suggest :

"If your hair is very brassy and stripey I would recommend that you get a toner at your local beauty supply in the desired color with a violet base. For example: Pale blonde base violet. If you apply the toner all over your hair it will also lighten the darker color and make it look a bit more uniform looking."

I went to my local sally''s beauty supply and got a pale ash blonde with a blue/violet base and will be trying it tomorrow (have to let my hair rest a least day:) I''ll keep you updated.

I am so sorry. The best and only thing you can really do now is all over color. And even then, I wouldnt use a permanent color. Definately semi-permanant that would wash out in 24 shampoos. But it never totally washes out. Remember that.

So go and find a really beautiful rich brown. Something really pretty. Don't settle or anything mousey. At first it will be a little dry. But if you keep conditioning with deep reconstructive treatments, it will get better. And get your hair cut as short as you are willing to go for. Then just let it grow out naturally. Keep cutting off the dead colored ends.

I have a question. I die my hair red, and I wanted to highlight it, so I went out and the closest they had to highlighting for red hair was a rich copper, but it is for medium to dark brown hair. If I used it on my hair, would it turn out a weird color?
