I am curious about Natural Instincts, Second Nature, etc. I have blonde highlights over a lt brown/dk blonde base (colored at the salon). What will these products do to my base and highlights? I certainly don't want to turn red! I would like to lighten up just a little. Is there a temp product, like NI, that I can eventually shampoo out if the results are horrible?

Natural Instincts really won't shampoo out. Their product description could be misleading. The color slowly drains until enough roots have grown back that it's time to use the product again. Your hair color will never return to what it was before using the product, it will just be different.

Most of the time when they say "washes out in 24 or so shampoos" that's usually the time it takes for enough root growth to show. The color will get less but it will still be noticeable. My application of Natural Instincts over previously colored hair looked great and stayed until the roots grew out. Then I made the dumb mistake of coloring with Excellence, with very flat results. Should have stuck with the Natural Instincts.

If your hair is highlighted I would be very careful what to put over it. If it were just colored without any highlights, you could take a chance and use a semi, or maybe even something like Loving Care. But be really careful and strand test first if you decide on anything.

I used Natural Instincts (linen: medium ash blonde) one time on my bleached hair. I had roots at the time. The color does not go blonde on the dark hair, since there is not enough power to lift the darker roots to a shade of blonde. It will not turn the dark blonde part of your hair red, the color will be very similiar and you will probably not even notice the change. However it will tone your highlights. Natural Instincts fades so quickly on very blonde bleached hair however, natural instincts only lasted a couple of washes on me
