question on using Shades Eq

i am going to try to color my own hair this time instead of paying to have someone do it for me. in may i had the girl who usually cuts my hair put highlights in.. she pulled it through the cap so i guess it was more like a frosting..well anywhay.. my hair is a med. brown and she used i would guess bleach and i had streaks all over of platnum(sp?) blonde. i looked like a skunk.. everyone hated it so had her use shades eq. i think she used mocha java. so i got the shaded in that color and processing solution off ebay and going to try it my self. now my question is.. ..
do i use a blush to put it on .. or just get a bottle and do it that way.. i am trying to grow out that blonde.. so i want to keep my roots the same color & just keep putting on the color to the rest... did i confuse anyone...
