QuoteReplyTopic: Help on Selecting Extensions Posted: February 16 2003 at 3:34pm
I hope someone can help, I live in Toronto, Ontario Canada. I have been researching hair extensions and have found a few systems, all proclaiming they are the best. My hairdresser is of no help as she is VERY opposed to any form of hair extension.
I am also in search of a great salon here in Toronto that does various types of extensions.
Here are a few I have found, all different methods, but as I have very fine fragile hair, I am very concerned, but really want to get extensions to allow my own hair to grow out. I have yet to find a really good place here in Toronto that I am happy with.
I would recommend the akinda magic extensions as this is the type that we do in our salon in New Zealand. The damage to hair is minimal as there is no heat, glue, clamps etc. good luck

Would you be able to travel somewhere to have the extensions put into your hair? How far? Do you live close to Long Island, NY? I know someone there is who tremendous. If not...what about HairPolice in the Detroit area?

Thanks for the reply, I had considered that, but I have found a great extension artist here in Toronto that has been doing extensions for 20 years and has been teaching for 15 years. I have had a consultation with him and he asked that I stay and watch as he had a client right after my consultation....he is good and the girl that had them done has been using the same guy for 3 years now, he did a wonderful job and I will be geeting mine done in 2 weeks
Thanks again!
I will post after I have had them done.

I'm also interested in getting extensions, I read the reply about a good extension artist in Long Island, NY. What is the salon called? Where is it located? and who is the artist?
I too find myself in the same situation in Toronto. I'm curious to know what Salon you chose and their method for appling the extensions. From your description we seem to have the same hair type. I would appreciate the name of the Salon and to know how yours turned out. One last thing, after researching I've found various pricing for each method. How did you find the prices at this Salon?

I had mine done, and all I can say is WOW! I wish I had of done it sooner. Fell free to e-mail me direct if youhave other questions at micailahope@yahoo.ca
The name of the Salon is Xtraordinaire and the owner and extension artist is Mick D'haram.
I did my reserch and consulted with 8 different salaons that specialize in extensions. Mick was the best by far and in my opinon very well priced. His portfolio speaks for itself. When I consulted with him he had a client that was in having her extensions and colour done, she has been seeig him for 3 years now and he asked that I stay and talk with her and watch while he worked.
To see it done and talk face to face with a current client that had the very same hair type and concerns as myself was what made the decision for me. He uses his own method, which is a type of stitching and all extenions are indivdual. He has taught in NY, London UK and Toronto, as I said he has been in the business 20 years. Most of his clients are by word of mouth and he does a tone of work for film studios here in Torornto. He is in much demand and only works 3 days a week, he also is an artist at custom blending the colour of the extensions.....mine is just awesome....he used 5 shades of blond to give me depth to my colour.
Again, if you have more questions e-mail me direct and make sure you put something about extensions in the re line if you do :-)
I have worn extensions for almost 3 years. I wore them curly for most of that time. I now sell the hair. Mine are done by what they call strand by strand. That is where they bond strands of hair close to the root of strands of your own hair. The quality of the hair you buy is as important as the workmanship of the stylist. The stylist should have a portfolio of people that they have done. They should also have gone through some sort of training. If put in and removed properly (AND taken care of properly by you) you should have no damage to your own hair. Visit my site and see some of the quality hair that is available. Email me if you have any other questions. www.ManeIllusions.com

Personally, I'm wary of using any kind of chemicals on my hair. Hardly any company will use the word "glue," but something strong enough to bond hair onto yours is going to take its toll.
I've worn pinch braids (tiny little braids that attach the hair to the scalp) that use no chemicals at all. I no longer wear extensions except for about a dozen synthetic colorful ones, and my hair is in excellent health. In fact, it's in better health than before I got the extensions because the extensions taught me how to take care of my hair -- less frequent washings, lots of conditioner on the ends, less combing, and no direct heat on them (for curling, I use either hot rollers or steam rollers).
How pinch braids look depends entirely upon stylist. If you have a skilled person, they can look very natural, or if you have someone who doesn't know what he's doing, then they can look very fake. It's tricky to find the line between leaving out enough hair on top to cover the braids without looking like you're wearing a thin layer of your own hair on top like a hat!
