After remover... what now?

I had a problem.. I dyed nice light brown/blonde highlighted hair black, went to salon and got it removed (with Modulat). (Black wasn`t bad but it`s not great for summer) Now my hair is dark brown with a line of "demarcation?" where my lighter roots (maye a half shade lighter) are coming in. I think only I can notice the line... My hair is still too dark, could I effectively dye lighter at this color? I`m "not" looking to use bleach. If I did get lighter would an ash toned dye be best since I have a slight reddish tint (the tint fades more everyday...)? Trying to avoid orange, but i`ll have a brown near by if I botch anything. I`m not a totally inexperienced amature colorist and I take full responsibility for my actions, I`d like some advice other than to go back to the salon.
