I would leave them in until you are ready to wash and condition your hair.

If you brush it after taking out your plaits, you break up the curl/wave pattern. Try lightly separating waves/curls only with your fingers. The more you play with it, the bigger and poofier it will get.
CO wash only since September '04! Dyed red botticelli curls (3b), fine and just past shoulder length

when plaits are put in my hair it can look nice when they come out but when i brush my hair when it gets knooty it grows into a afro
