Need styles for Military Ball (have waist-length thick hair)

I have the type of hair that you can do pretty much anything with; it`s reddish-brown and waist-length yet pretty thick. However I can`t seem to find a style that`s apropriate for an occasion such as the Military Ball that I can do on my own (I am relatively good at styling my own hair, I simply lack a lot of tools necessary to do horribly elaborate updos and such).
