Hello everyone I'm new to this site. I'm writing because I am now deep in the heart of a hair emergency. This winter has been cruel to my hair. I come from a family who's Native American Motto is "Cut your hair, lose your honor." For that reason, I've never cut it. It use to be down to my bra, but lately it has been breaking off sooo much that it is a little longer than chin length, but the very back is shorter. Of course this mortified me and since then I've been reading posts on this site for help. I would like to know what is the best shamps, conditioners, and hair treatments to moisturize and strengthen hair. At the moment I use Thermasilk moisturizing conditioner and Conditioning Thermal Beads followed by carrot oil. I wash and press only once a week. I don't use a hair dryer or hair gels, sprays, or spritzes. Any suggestions? I would like to grow it to past my bra this time. What is a good vitamin also. (I'm just getting all the info I can!) I'd appreciate your responses. I love this site.
Hi I'm new too! Umm are you doing anything different to your hair? did you color it or do anything you dont normally do? Well maybe you should try giving your hair a break from pressing it. Maybe you should get braids for a while. You also need to make sure you keep oil or grease on your hair. Don't brush it or comb it if your can. If you have to be very careful. Do it softy. Well good luck.
I haven't done anything differently. I've always pressed my hair and it's been strong up until now. I'm not a big fan of braids but I do twist my hair once a month so as to not press TOO much. The only immediate changes made was from Pantene to Thermasilk. Pantene dried it out. I see everyone talking about Redken All Soft though. How is that for weak dry hair??
You should try a protein deep conditioner. There are some good ones out there and many recipies. 1)the deep conditioning treatment uses heat (steam) so you need to find one that requires a hot moist towel that will be rapped around the hair, a heating cap or hooded hair dryer. 2)it needs protien( keratin, collogen, amino acids etc) 3) the deep treatment needs to be left on the hair for 20 -30 minutes. then rinse well. I recommend you go t a hair good hair salon that sells lots of products. It may cost a bit more than drug store brands but it is worth it. also read the ingredients and make sure it has proteins or amino acids in it.
I have very bad breakage and I am a little bit cheap. I mix 100% pure aloe gel with a protien powder that contains 90% protein. I mix the two and add a little water and a teaspoon of honey. I mix it until its creamy and totally saturate my hair with the stuff. (f you have bad beakage you need alot to cover up all thoughs holes) I rap my hair in a damp hot towel and place over the towel my heating cap and leave it on for 30 minutes. This treatment is alot cheaper considering the fact that I use alot of it. and it works way better then the expensive treatments. I recommend it to be used once a week.
Hi there! I have problems with breakage as well--but that is to be expected because I blow dry three times a week. Good for you--you're only doing the heat-style thing once a week and that's great. Also, using oils will help lubricate your hair--so you get another star :-)
A good strengthening product is Aphogee treatment. It's not expensive--$5 at Sally Beauty if you live in the U.S. or U.K.--and is a concentrated protein formula. It's a good deal, especially when you consider that other alleged "protein treatments" only contain keratin or some other derivative halfway down the ingredient list and cost twice as much. Hydrolyzed protein is the second ingredient listed, so this is the real thing. If you're a vegan, however, Aphogee isn't for you as it contains animal by-products.
I have been happy with the results, but I must warn you, Aphogee treatment smells AWFUL! Like rotting fruit or something equally disgusting. It lingered in my hair for two days and my shower smelled like....well I really don't know how to describe it.
If that doesn't turn you away, Aphogee does work. If you can stand it! :-)
Some other suggestions for reducing breakage: sleep on a satin pillowcase (cotton fibers tend to grad hair strands as you turn in your sleep--the friction can cause breakage), never brush wet hair; only use a comb, don't brush your hair more often than necessary (this degrades the cuticle), make sure to stay healthy and take a vitamin supplement if appropriate. Good luck!
