I went to have my TR done a few months ago and before the TR the owner suggested I get a "silicone base" before applying Liscio to my hair so that it would be more shiny and healthy looking..I agreed, not knowing anything about it and believed him that it was something my hair absolutely needed since he stressed it so much, it was another $60 added to the cost of the TR itself..After my first wash my hair was underprocessed and still very wavy, I didn't go back because I wasn't sure if they would do anything about it and foolishly was a little intimidated to say anything..I went back a month later because I needed to have my hair colored and they suggested the silicone base again because it had "washed out" and they said that it again would make my hair shinier and I would need to return every month to re-do the silicone base..My hair was very dry after my first wash so I didn't see how the silicone base could make a difference so I refused it but they still kept pushing the issue..Luckily I ended up not doing it and I've been able to get my hair to a very healthy condition but now that I've been reading the boards I've read silicone can actually suffocate the hair and be worse for it rather than help it..Now to my questions: Is this something that you offer in your salon prior to TR? Is it healthy for the hair? And, do you think I was misinformed in order to milk more money for the TR than I should have? I definitely don't want to go back to the same salon but I do need a good place to go for my re-touch in May that will re-process the underprocessed hair and do my roots as well..I know this is a loaded question, sorry it's so long but I would appreciate any feedback, thanx so much in advance.

In reference to “I've been reading the boards I've read silicone can actually suffocate the hair and be worse for it rather than help it”. We all read a lot of stuff on the boards some are true, but most aren’t. You’ll find silicone ingredient, such as dimethicone and/or products ending with “cone” in most hair care products.

You cannot think of silicones as an impermeable coating. Perhaps under an extreme condition where the hair was very porous and a lot of repeated use and heat was used they might be "baked" in and make penetration difficult but for the most part they don't hinder penetration of other ingredients. Silicone products such as dimethicone gives the hair smooth slip, soft feeling and adds brilliance. However, not all hair types react well to silicones, some experience a quick build up, leaving hair drab, oily and limp.

The silicone base product that you are referring to is probably called “Ionic Reconditioning” or something similar to that effect. The idea of these products is that they neutralize charges on the hair fiber to eliminate static and make the hair to look shiny, but it doesn't repair damage in any way I can see. If your hair is in good condition you do not have to hide its faults and your hair will be shiny, manageable and will stay well. I do not use such products, and when I set a price for a TR service it is usually based on my preliminary test results, hence, the price is all inclusive. I don’t ask my clients questions regarding extra treatment - I just do what needs to be done. If I find that the client’s hair needs extra conditioning after the TR service, I’ll just do it at no extra cost to the client. As to whether or not you’ve been misinformed! As a professional TR technician, I find it bizarre for a stylist to charge extra for a service that he/she undertook to satisfy the client’s wants and needs. That's just my opinion!

Before TR and after TR at-home hair care is very important - you need a professional stylist who can analyze your hair properly and provide the right advice for your individual needs. Before TR and after the consultation I help my clients on how to prepare their hair Before the TR service. After the TR service, my clients leave the salon with a regimen of protein and moisturizing hair care products with a detailed instruction sheet explaining on how to use these products at-home, and how to maintain their new TRd hair. I don’t take anything for granted. In addition, after each TR service I ask my clients to stay in touch: 1) A report immediately after the first at-home shampoo/conditioner/treatment/style; which is 72 hours after the TR service. 2) Once a week thereafter for the next two to three weeks. These are some of the things I do for my clients in the salon.

Eventually, clients will sooner or later realize the honesty and integrity of the stylist and make their own decision.

It's not always easy to weed out information from boards when you have so many different opinions, I'm glad to hear that the silicones aren't as bad as I previously thought but I definitely do want to take the time and find a place where I can feel more comfortable about the people who are taking care of my hair..Thanx for your reply
