Hello, my name is Jessi. New to the site and am so glad I stumbled upon it! Almost exactly a year ago, my hair started falling out. After a few weeks I had lost about 3/4 of my entire head and the loss slowed down, but I had almost nothing. I decided to shave my head and wear wigs. It was devastating, to my personality and self esteem. I felt like I lost my femininity. So now, a year later, my hair is back and have not had a problem. It's 4 inches on top and 2 by my neck. Its ridiculously thick, even more than it was before. I guess I am here because I am interested in doing my own extensions. I want to gather as much information and advice before I take the leap. Any help would be appreciated. So glad to be here, Wish I had found you guys sooner! :)
I know how frustrating it is to deal with hair loss due to damage. It is great you discovered how resourceful wigs can truly be. Cutting all the damaged hair off and starting new was an excellent choice.
You now have strong healthy new growth your better option is to apply extensions with the braid and sew method.
1) Never braid your natural hair tightly. If your face looks like a botox and lift injection after braiding the braids are too tight.
2) apply the weft to braid and sew onto braid using weaving thread. Weaving thread is thicker than typical garment sewing thread.
It is important to apply an anti- itch braid spray to the scalp while wearing the extensions.
Pros: You can wash your hair and extensions when wearing a sew in weave.
Sew-in weaves/extensions foster growth. I hope this helps

What type of hair do you have PerfectlyFlawed? Your story is inspiring as my two best friends lost all of their hair at the same time due to cancer treatment. (mom and aunt) They wore wigs to it was very sad frustrating and scary for them but we all managed to get through it as you did. I am curious the type of hair you have as there are so many methods of extensions out there it is good to become informed on what will work best for you and your hair type. Glad to have you here. xoxo

I'm sorry to hear about your friends. I am very lucky in that aspect, I did not lose my hair because of an illness. I never dyed or treated my hair. I am Puerto rican, my hair was very thick, silky and straight, dark brown. And one day, clumps upon clumps would come out in my hand. I went to a dermatologist with 2 massive valve spots and he said it could be alopecia, but was certain they would grow back. All tests came back fine.. He didn't give me much information or help (he was quite short and treated me like I was a burden in his office). Not too long after that I had little wisps of hair, until I took the rest off.

My hair is pretty long (mid-neck length). I want to style it like Avan Jogia. I already have layers in my hair, and it's naturally wavy.
I'm wanting to know how to give it as much volume as he has. Also, anyone have any suggestions on how to keep my bangs out of my face? What products do I need?

It has been a while so I decided to start off the new year with some hope and a quick introduction. How is everyone doing. It's a new year and I'm ready to do my thing in 2013. Right now I'm building some new shelves in the kitchen.Yep, I'm a lady carpenter. A project that is keeping me busy along with a million other things. I will let you know how my shelf project goes as I progress.
Ok, I hope everyone is doing fine. I need to walk my diabetic dog now. She has a hair cut appointment this afternoon
cheers stevie.
