QuoteReplyTopic: Hairdresser or no hairdresser Posted: July 05 2005 at 1:36pm
I currently go to the shop to get my hairdone but notice it is not growing as fast as last year when I was doing it myself... Do you guys think hairdressers help or not... I mean like do they do stuff to make us keep coming back. I could have saved alot of money and had more growth im thinking if i only went to get perms and did my hair myself with a well invested flat iron. Does anyone agree>>> Just want some advice because it seems hairdressers don't like to take extra time to deep condition, put protective heat spray and etc on our hair if so we get extra charged. I need advice thanks
when people ask you why too much they usually want to really ask why are you so fly

There are hairdressers, that take the time with your hair and but you have to search for them really hard. I haven't been to a hairdresser in over a year. In the last 10 years, I have only had one that was even concerned about my hair being dry, told me what kind of conditioners to use, didn't charge extra for deep conditioning, and she never used curling irons or blow dryers. My advice is to read the boards, there is some much good information and people willing to help you.

I only go to the hairdresser to get a trim, other than that I do my own hair. There are good hairdressers out there that will really care for your hair, the trick is finding one.

Yeah... alot of hairdressers aren't too concerned about the health of your hair. If you find one and see improvement then you should continue to go to him/her. But if you feel that your hair is healthier and retains length more with your own assistance than you should continue that. Whichever you feel more comfortable at. I haven't been to a hair dresser in over 5 years and my hair is doing just fine.
If I could blow dry and trim myself I would not go either but if a hairdresser gets to know u and ur hair I think they will take the time to care...some are scissor happy and need customer's money to thrive so I would vote "no" if possible...
I think it depends on the indivual and on the hairdresser. I get the best results from a combo of both salon and at home hair maintenance. When I am lazy about doing either, my hair suffers. I have had several cases where I went to a hairdresser and the results were terrible but overall, I have had a couple of terrific hair dressers and once I find one I like, I stick with them so they get to know my hair. Even the best hairdressers (ourselves included) are capable of a mistake every now and then.
I have been fortunate though that I have had access to many good hairdressers in NYC. There are pricey places that are good for sure, but also many more (especially ethnic salons) that are very affordable and use quality products (ex. Salerm, Sebastian, etc). In many areas, there are 2 or 3 Dominican shops on one street. I understand that in places where there are a more limited number of ethnic hair salons, a good hair dresser for our hair type can be hard to find, so it is even more important to be able to care for you own hair.
One thing I won't skimp on is a good haircut. The right cut can play up features, be easy to maintain and will grow out nicely.
Also, typically at most NYC Dominican shops, some customers routinely bring their own products which the beauticians are happy to use. Many clients bring their own deep conditioner, leave in, even their own shampoo or relaxer. The beauty shop I go to now, charges a $2 dryer fee when they use a customer's deep conditioner (still saves $$ as the shop's deep conditioner is $10). Maybe when you do go to the salon, try bringing some of your own products. If they don't use a heat protectant on your hair, I would definitely bring one and insist that they use it. If they do use these on you and charge extra, that seems fair as these products cost them money, but in all honesty, any time they use direct heat on your hair they should automatically use a protectant. This should be built into the price. Deep conditioners are extra at every beauty shop I have ever been to.

Before my last hairdresser visit (last month) I hadn't been to the salon since I was transitioning last July. I went last month and now realize that I was not missing anything. I can do my own hair at home and save the money for other nice things. And like someone said, a great deal of them are not into health at all. It's really sad.
Since I started relaxing my hair. I have noticed it is alot thicker then when I was getting it done. and you can deffinatly tell by my ends. I think that if you are actually doing well at the hair dresser, then you should go to one. But if you are ending up with underprocessed, breaking hair then its time to go see a professional. I used to go for dye,and trims.. I dont dye right now so I only go for trims.
Hairdressers help if you don't know how to take care of your hair at home, but they don't help me. I know how to do my own color, relaxer, trim my own hair, rollersets, etc. I stopped going to the salon in Jan of this year, and I doubt I will ever go back.
