hi, i find that if you balance the bun properly and support it well then the weight is distributed evenly and it isnt as painfull. i use wide metal pins that have covered ends and the straight bits have a wave to them. i do a sort of firm pony in the mid back of my head and shake my head a bit, if it tugs anywhere i take it down and do again. once its right i start to twist the pony and pull upwards and round the pony base. as you twist and wrap add a pin every cm of the way. it uses alot of pins but they all hold the weight between them, then the bun doesnt slip and it doesnt hurt. it takes practice though. but i find that balance is the secret to a comfy head. sorry this is a bit long.
I need to do something with my hair. It is fairly long, (lower back), and it doesn't always look good down so I like to wear it up and pulled back a lot. Well, the problem is it is too heavy to be comfortable. It feels like it is pulling my hair too much. I hate to get it cut shorter but I don't know what else to do. Also, my pony tail looks too bushy. (My hair is wavy.) Any suggestions?
Have you tried to braid it? Try a french braid. I have long hair too. And sometimes when its too hot or have to carry my camera around i make a french braid. It looks nice and then you don`t have to cut your hair. You can try many braids. You can practice on your own hair, many different styles. Its fun. There are web sites on braids and they even show you how to do them if you don`t know how. I hope this helps. Good luck!

I`d say get it cut shorter. If it`s going to cause you discomfort it`s not really worth it. Also I think if you ask your hair dresser its possible to layer it in some way that makes it lighter..

Next time you feel that way and you have some place to go, e-mail me, I`ll show up, walk behind you and carry your hair to ease your discomfort. In fact, it will be my pleasure. hehehe

The only time I get headaches with my length and weight of hair is when I`ve got it in a high ponytail that is pulled too tightly too high , or if I put it up wet. I don`t think that the weight is the issue so much as the technique of putting it up. I`ve got medium thickness very fine hair almost past my behind (pretty good horizontal volume, too), and generally I have it in a low bun or a low ponytail. Often I wear it folded over itself with a scrunchie. You know, pull the hair partway through, fold up, twist the scrunchie around it, pull more through, twist again, etc. The weight of my hair rests on the nape of my neck that way. I think the trick is to keep it loose near your head. That way there is less pulling on your scalp, and the weight of your hair is distributed better.

My hair is definitely too heavy for a ponytail, so I always keep it in a French braid or in a braid starting at my neck. The only time I get headaches is when I pull it too tightly into a barette.
My hair is to my waist and very thick. I think cutting it short is a mistake because I know that everytime my hair has been cut shorter than midback it just bushes totally out. I agree with jacque, I find that a nice braid(I do a french braid) looks great and doesn't seem to give me headaches from the weight like when I wear it in a bun or ponytail.
agree, agree, agree. Long hair is the bomb... there is always a solution other than cutting it off.

Hi! I had the same problem with mine. It was halfway down my back and I got it all cut off up to my chin in a layered bob. it looks awesome and the weight is all gone! Well.....it has been fun and I have enjoyed it for about 6 months and am now missing my long, heavy hair. I can tell you that the my hair was so thick that I could only wrap the thick goody band around it once and it would be hanging down loose 15 mins later. So I started wearing it in a braid down the back like an indian. I would wet it from the neck down and put gel in it, then braid it so that it would look nice and straight. Then put some tigi bed head shine junkie on it. Always worked and stayed nice all day.

I don`t know what you could do, I`ve heard that long hair can sometimes put strain on your back or neck, causing you to get sometype of back or neck problem(I can`t remember it that well, I read something about it about 2 months ago.) :DI hope someone here can help and has a better solution than cutting it shorter.
