QuoteReplyTopic: Cutting my own hair (male)? Should I Try? Posted: August 25 2005 at 7:06pm
Hey All,
I'm an African-American male living in NYC. I stumbled upons this
Message Board after seaching the Web for advice on cutting my own hair.
I've been going to a barber for years (think Barbershop). I have a
couple "regular" barbers depending on where I am: a guy by my job, a
guy close to my apt and the barber I actually prefer but halfway across
the city. I'll jump to the point: I like getting my hair cut and I get
it cut, at least, once a week. For me it's worth the money. The cut's
always the same - a very low/skin fade. I've had it done thousands
times, literally. I know I can do it. I know the clipper brand and
blade number - everything. I even know the type of clipper that I don't
like because it doesn't cut unevenly (which no one other than someone
who gets a fade can ever tell). So, should I do it? The clipper itself
and the blades aren't cheap and I don't want to buy them and never do
it. I figure if I screw it up royally I'll throw on a hat and run to a
barber. My cut's close to bald anyway so if he has to take it all off
to fix it ... fine with me. (I'll just blame it on using a "bad barber"
- again - then pledge allegiance to only him if he fixes it.) My main
reason for doing this is because I like having that "fresh cut" look
and it's just time consuming to keep running to the barber given my
schedule. And if I save some money too, that's just another reason to
do it. It's certainly worth paying for only if I can't do it myself.
The clipper and blades will pay for itself in 1 month or 4 self-cuts.
So, should I or shouldn't I? Is there anything I should know
beforehand? Something I should watch out for? Is this a mistake waiting
to happen? Bro's any of you tried it or currently doing it?
Thanks for any advice!

Like cmesweet said, the mens forum could help you a lot. I think it's at the bottom of the page.
My bro cuts his hair all the time and it sounds like he has the same cut as you (very low fade). He's never messed up. You just have to have good clippers and blades. I think the hardest part would be shaping up the back because he has to get someone else to do that but I'm sure it can be done though.

Thanks for the confidence. I think I'm going to just give it a try. I've already reposted it in the Men's area. I didn't see it the first time because I stopped when I saw African American Hair.
