I am wanting to go mostly blonde, right now the very top layer of my hair is dark brown and through out the bottom layers of my hair is blonde streaks with dark brown throughout. I am wanting to color the top layer that is dark brown to blonde. How do I go about doing this myself, I did all of my color I have npw myself. Do I just get the bleach from Sally's and some toner to tone it down after the bleaching process is over? Thats what I did for my blonde streaks, I just dont want it to look really white or really yellow. Any suggestions? I eventually wanna go all blonde and I need some suggestions on how to get started I guess. Here is a  pic of my hair now. Any Ideas on what to get to dye it?

Going lighter is a tricky process, especially since you have dyed your hair with dark color.

The first step you have to do is to get colorfix to remove the old dye in the hair, your hair will probably turn out orange post Colorfix. But since you're only doing the top of the hair It can be tricky to avoid colorfix ending up allover your hair. So maybe you should skip using colorremover.

And just start out with highlighting the hair with bleach, depending on how light you want the top layer to be you may have to do highlights a couple of times, taking the hair gradually lighter. Cause you may not be able to do enough foils to make it light enough in 1 time.

Bleach the hair with an off scalp lightener and 30 vol, untill it turns yellow. Then when you're done with bleaching, you'll need to tone the top layer of your hair I suggest that you go for a medium blonde toner. So that the highlights blends with the bottom layer and not pops as much as white/platinum highlights would.

Good luck

So I should start with streaks first instead of bleaching it all at once?  Would pulling it through a cap work? I am also not sure wha tI am supposed get at Sally's I usually get Beyond the Zone on/off scalp Radical bleach kit and Clairol Born Blonde Toner and the color balance crystals. Do you kno the specific things I need to get at Sally's?

Thank you sooooo much for helpong me

The reasons why you should go for highlights is that you don't have to care about the scalp. I think It'd be almost impossible to get to from dark brown to blonde in just one bleaching, cause you can't bleach so aggresive when you're putting bleach on the scalp because then you may get burns.

And it's very hard to make sure that the bleach does not bleed thru to the bottom layers, turning them funky shades of orange etc.

Both foils or a highight cap would work, anyway I think you should get a friend to help you out.

My idea is to take the top layer gradually lighter by doing highlights one time or several times and stop when you think that the top layer is light enough.

What you'll need is:

(I think buying a tub of bleach and separate developer is more economical and better cause you can be sure you won't run out of bleach in the middle of it all than getting a bleaching kit)

* Clairol Basic White/ or Clairol BW2 (off scalp bleach)

* 30 volume (for bleach) creme developer and 20 volume developer (for toning)

* Highlight foils or a highlight cap

* Colorbrush (get one wide and one small)

*Wella colorcharm dye shades: 811* light blonde or 911* very light blonde. Born blonde toners may work also, or any semi permanent medium/light blonde neutral base toner.

good luck to you!

It wont' happen in one bleaching. I bleached mine 9 times and I can't get it any lighter than it is now. I have naturally black hair. I bleached outta a box, got a lovely suprrise (orange/yellow hair) kept it for a while, than went in and got it pro lightened to a beigey blonde.
It's so hard to go from black to blonde, it's a hellish process.

Well I have the bleach ( Clairol BW2 bleach powder & 30 volume cream developer ) on my hair  right now, I have had it in for about 50 mins now, its turned blonde, it did instantly, Its still got a yellow tint to it so I am leaving it on longer. It was a bitch pulling my long hair through that cap!!! I just did the top layer and a few on the side. It was sooo frustrating and took forever! Well I am waiting patiently to see the outcome of it. I'm going to put the toner on next. Well I will post a pic sooner or later.

Ok PLEASE HELP! I dont know wtf happened??? I pulled the hair through the cap and now that I have washed it out some of the streaks have spots in it! I used the toner, but it has a redesh tone to it now afterwards. What can I do?Can I re-dye it and NOT use the cap? Just use foils? I am so upset :( The spots are towards the root part, at the top of the streaks, its just brown spots, I dono how that happened? Can I just put the bleach towards the roots where the spots are and can I put more bleach on the streaks that are red toned? Its not that bad, but it really bugs the hell outa me, bc u can see it a little, I guess I will just go get some more stuff and color mainly where the spotty parts are. I hope it works. I would like to get the orangy red out too. And swede what do you mix with the 20 developer to make toner? Or do you even mix anything with it?

Thanks. I know, I am a dork! lol.

did you use colorfix before bleaching? If you didnt your lucky your hair looks like it does.If you want to get out the streaks you'll have to bleach again.Just be careful.Your hair still looks shiny and nice. But too much bleach will change that.It doesnt look bad all in all.I think one more bleaching will help alot.Good luck.

I think the only option is to re highlight your hair, and this time take it all the way to yellow.

I'm sorry things didn't turn out the way it. I think the mistake was to not leave the bleach on long enough :( You should have waited untill it turned light enough (yellow).

I wonder if foils is better than a cap since you'll be able to pick out the darkest strands.

After you've bleached your hair again, and got rid of the orangeness. You'll need to tone. Mix wella colorcharm toner with 2 parts 20 vol developer. Just follow the instructions.

I think that you should consider going to haircolorist, and get the mess sorted out. :(

I have fixed my hair and it looks A LOT better then what it did. Yea there  are a few places here and there that need touched  up, but I am going to do that when I need to re do my roots. Its not that ugly blonde anymore, and the spots are gone. I used the bleach powder and the 30 volume developer for my roots, and the wella stuff, and I also used born blonde after I used the wella and they both calmed the color down. Its still not exactly the color of blonde thAt I am wanting, but I know it takes time to get it there. Next time, when I do my roots I am going to put the bleach on some of the streaks that are still reddish....hopefully that will be ok.

Well thanks all for the help and suggestions!

Here is the color of my hair now.

< I just took this pic not too long ago, I used wella color charm in a lighter shade, b4 I used wella twice in a golden blonde shade. Anyway, this is my hair now. I'm fine with it I suppose.

I got my hair cut the other day, and it looks a lot healthier then what it did b4.

~OK my hair isnt that color anymore, I turned my hair back to a Medium redish brown, bleached blonde just wasnt doing it for me, it looked too fake, I thought I liked it at first, but then I started not liking it.~

I'm glad things turned out pretty alright.

I think you should wait a while to see if any brekage occurs, then you may think about re bleaching the orange streaks. But I think it may risky, I'd suggest going to a pro, because then you can blame them if something bad happens :P
