how do u get them so close to the scalp?

I am a newbie so forgive my ignorance, but I was just on Amanda's site and was amazed at the pics of her installs. My question is either with shrinkies or fusion, how do u get sooooooooo close to the scalp and still have the extension lay flat? For one, I cant seem to get my iron that close to the head, and when i do get it close then extension seem to bow out kinda instead of lay flat. I am using the hair sheild but sometimes that seems to make it worse. what am i doing wrong???
