I hope someone out there can help me.  I have very dry curly brown hair.  I've never been able to manage my hair so it always winds up in a pony tail.  I gave the blonde thing a try, but now the blonde has turned an ugly dark yellow and my brown roots are making everything look even worse.  I'd like to go back to a brown, what do you suggest?

I'd like to find a new salon, but I don't know how to determine if what they are suggesting is what is goign to work.  I'm terrible with my hair, and I need help.  If they say they'll dye it brown...is that going to work, or will the blonde show through?

HELP!!!

If they dye your hair brown it should cover your highlights, but beware that they will fade with time, requiring you to tone them with a semi-permanent or even a permanent dye if you like, but semi-perminent should be enough to just cover them.

You could try covering them now with a semi-permanent, but it really won't hold the color for too long, so I say go with the permanent first.  If your hair is really dry and unmanageable I suggest you deep condition it once a week.  For daily care, try the Smooth Down line from Redken, or for more curl definition you could try the Fresh Curls line, also from Redken.

Thanks for the recommendation, I need all the help I can get.  I will let you know how it goes.  Also I will try that Smooth Down line, that is the first I've heard of it.

Actually, I would not use a permanent color. You need to read some threads on here about going darker, they got me to brown from dyed-blonde hair, and permanent color probably won't hold. You need to fill your hair before you color it,a nd you need a SEMI permanent color, as this is deposit-only color. Permanent color lightens before depositing, and on your porous, lightened hair, this will cause more damage and fading. You can either buy a protein filler, or fill with hair dye that has no developer added (this is what I did).

Also, when you dye back to brown, pick a color lighter than what you want. The colors turn out alot darker than you would think. I had black hair for a month or so, and it finally faded to a more natural looking brown. By the way, It has been many months, and the color is staying, so this really worked for me. Good luck, and don't forget to research this a bit. IT is a drastic change, but can be done successfully.

If your goal is to only cover your highlights then go for the semi permanent dye.  However, if you want a different shade of brown to your hair, then you should try the permanent hair dye.  I personally haven't had problems using permanent hair dye to cover my highlights, but really if all you want is to cover them then do use the semi permanent.

Nice catch on the filler hannebash, I had completely forgot about that.  I think just the pre tone thing though (using only the dye without oxidizer on the highlights first) works well, and it's usually what the professionals do.

Do look into Redken's Smooth Down, it's what they recommed for chemically treated hair, so it'll really hidrate your hair and should get rid of the frizzies.

I'm set up for an appointment on Tuesday!  In my consultation the lady recommended using a semi-permanent dye.  Her reasoning was that permanent dyes really open the pores of the hair and don't fully close up.  Since I'll probably need 2-3 treatments over the next 3-6 months she didn't want to use permanent dye and risk my hair being permanently damaged.  I'm goign to begin with a lighter brown and slowly work myself back to the natural color.

What makes everything worse is the opions people have on my looks.  Some of my friends absolutly love the blonde, and others miss the brown...I guess what matters is my opinion and that is I like the brown, and secretly just wish I had someone elses nice flowing locks.
