Both my bros do there line up themselves but you need practise first get a haircut and a nice low trim then the week after line up yourself, should be easy since the outline from your cut is there then wait for 2 weeks this time then do it then 3 weeks etc it's jus bout practising till anything possible.
I've jus started an am about to start my first one this friday
Keep on brushing

Man real talk Bigg Mike, It's funny what faith brings. My mom couldn't afford me getting my haircut niether. That's bought how I learned to cut my self. I used to ask my little brothers to let fade them they would say no cuz my skillz was low. Now it's A different story.
Another thing you can do Is go to the barbershop and watch cuz they can show you better than we can tell you. Remember your obsevations and image you already see your line how you want it and just do it. Trust your hands.

this is what i do. i shape myself up every other day. i let the barber cut my hair and then 2 days later when my hair starts to grow back i just follow what tha barber did. me being an artist might help me . yull be alright if you have steady hands. let some one you trust do the back
If you are trying to learn. Get some practice on other peoples hair. My cusin and I learned that way. We cut each others hair when we were in the 7th grade up to highschool. Now I'm 33 years old and been cutting hair for almost 20 years.
But I started only because my dad lost his job and my parents could not afford to pay for all my hair cuts. It's not that hard if you get some practice in.
Look to the skies and keep your eyes on the prize! I been through Hell but, STILL I RISE!

Yeah, try to take off as little as possible and follow your natual hair line intill you get tight. 3 way mirrior is the best as far as using angles for the sides and back.
