Can anyone recommend a good, affordable water filter for the shower?

Yes, I am hoping that it will help my skin and hair since my water is very hard here and I am also trouble shooting difficulties with extensions.

I actually ran out to Lowes and Home Depot last night.  I found one at Home Depot that is got good reviews online, easy to change filter the brand name is Paragon for only about $20 and the refill filters cost $10.

Here is one of the places I found info about shower water filters: http://www.showerfiltercomparisons.com

Paragon is a pretty good filter. Another top rated brand is the Aquasana...a bit pricier but great reviews! Order it online.Shower filters make all the difference in the world to me. In hard or soft water, it removes all that harsh CHLORINE!!! Chlorine will dry those extensions out in a hurry-let me tell ya!

I bought one last night at Home Depot. They only carried ONE kind. It was dirt cheap....only $17.99 I thought, what the heck it cant hurt anything, I'll try it! If it doesnt work well I'll order from the website posted above!

I guess I never thought about it before...but looking back. The house I lived in before had a water softener. Now after living here for 9 months with city water, Ive had so many problems with hair extensions drying out and not living up to there expected longetivity. I also purchased an a natural, non-sulfate shampoo and conditioner last night. Hopefully Im on the road to longer lasting hair extensions!

sherrie-

If the shower filters out chlorine, it should really help things alot! Give it some time...about a week or so to really notice a difference. Not so much like a water SOFTENER- they usually make your hair ultra soft ( sometimes too soft for certain people.) but chlorine filters keep your hair from getting so darn dried out. Not to mention they keep your body from absorbing all that horrible chlorine!

ya know...I never realized before how bad the chlorine in tap water really is for you. Until this topic came up and I started reading....do you know that chlorine vaporizes in the shower and then we are inhaling it into our lungs....besides absorbing it through our skin....that just really freaked me out!

oh yeah...it's bad stuff! Think about how permeable your skin is with lotions and topical medications and imagine filling your tub up with tap water for a nice long soak in chlorine! You can actually buy these little tub balls , like a mini filter on some health and wellness sites to get chlorine out of your tub water. But if your tub is in with your shower, you are lucky--you can just fill the tub from the showerhead ( with your filter on it, of course!) The worst thing about chlorine is the fact that yes, it kills bad bacteria but it also kills the GOOD bacteria in our bodies when we shower and bathe in it everyday...not to mention DRINKING it in our water. I will only drink filtered water now that I have educated myself on the negative aspects of chlorine. I take probiotics everyday to add to my body's healthy flora. Good bacteria is imperative for good digestive health. The last thing I want to do is KILL everything I'm doing with chlorine! It's a catch 22 with chlorine. It DOES keep harmful organisms in check in our water supply...but it is not selective in what it destroys...and it dries the hell out of your hair!

I take probitotics, too. Even my dog is on them. He gets a total BARF diet (that means Bones and Raw Food) LOL! I get all his stuff from here: http://b-naturals.com/default.php

Back to the filters - they are worth every penny. A quick check online reveals the glorious benefit to hair and skin. I'm telling you, mine has extended my hair longetivity ten-fold.

Switch to a cold process type soap, too. The natural glycerin content in this soap will cut your lotion use dramatically. :)

This little $20.00 filter has completely turned around the condition of my hair.

OK, I have now washed my hair with my new shower filter 3 times using the exact same products as before.  Today was the first day in a week that I have not had to add more product in the middle of the the day to my extensions to keep them from drying out and tangling.  The hair is soft again, looks and feels great.  I won't even have to put extra oil in the ends before I go to bed if I don't want to!

To tell the truth all I really was expecting is that the hair would not get drier than it already was...never really thought that the condition of the extensions could actually get fixed.  I am relieved and feel the thrill of victory...so cool!

Yay! I'm so glad you have experienced the "feel of the filter!" lol...Makes a huge difference, huh? This information should be MANDATORY for all extension wearers! It will lengthen the life of your strands- no doubt!

Yep, to start I going to put one in my 2 son's shower.  They won't care (teenage boys!) but I will feel better about lessening their exposure to chlorine!

msfitns...I think you are on to something! I think we need to start recommending a shower filter in after care instructions for hair extensions!

Also i tend to suffer from extremely dry hair when abroad, like when i go to spain in summer. Are these shower filters portable? Like could i take it to Spain with me and fit it to the shower there?

Sherrie- When I had my salon and did extensions with my partner ( I've now sold it and no longer do extensions--I just WEAR them!) we always told our clients FILTER FILTER FILTER! I agree-- it should be apart of routine extension care.

ickledee- Hmmm. Not sure what the water is like in Scotland. ??? Do they require chlorine to be added to the public water supply? I would think so...or at least something similiar. The levels may not be as bad, perhaps. But YES! A filter will definitely benefit you...it is certainly good protection from other micro-organisms as well. Generally, the home filters are not portable. Once you screw that sucker on, it's pretty tight! You could possibly remove it and take it with you..but it would be a pain in the ARSE. Also, I'm not sure how the shower head fittings are abroad. They may be different. ? I will have to look into a portable one. If they dont make them yet, it's a great idea!

Let me get this straight (and thanks to Sarytyr for the link): Its chlorin that tangles the hair, and not so much lime?

We don“t use chlorin in the water, out in the country where I live in Denmark, but we do have at LOT of lime (we live on limestone . Our biggest "mountain" in Denmark is 1 km high).

So I don“t have to think about the lime hurting the extensions?

I have a huge amount of lime or calcium in my water as well.  Chlorine will cause drying out of the skin and hair and also causes chemical fumes.  I believe that water that is very hard (lime deposits, water spots from lime) can cause your skin and hair to be drier too because soaps and shampoos do not always rinse away completly.   I read this on a website I found by typing in shampoo for hard water:

"Homes that depend on well water often exposing hair to minerals (iron, calcium, copper, magnesium) that can attach on to the hair and scalp and cause dryness, damage, discoloration, hair loss, flaky, itchy scalp, and the inability for chemical services to properly process."

I also have seen shampoos made especially for cleaning water mineral deposits and Chlorine from the hair.

Hugs, Sandy
