I also have very coarse and thick hair.   I use a hair mask once a month and  Argan oil after every wash.   My hair is definitely more silky - you can never make it less coarse but at least it is manageable.   I also use a curling iron all over and especially the front to give it a flip and this lasts through the day.   This means I don't have to perm it as my hair does not hold a perm for long.   Hope this helps.

i agree with anais..

i like to let my hair dry with a nice leave-in, pulled back in a bun or braid...

then, the next morning i can style it (yes, i heat style.. don't kill me guys) and it's soft and silky..

lots and lots of conditioner on your hair covered with cap, or towel or plastic wrap.

I use (but I think it only works since it's so short right now) shea butter as a type of 'gel' in my hair (it actually holds it and I can use it to spike it up! hehehe) and then spray one some oils and stuff. So it's nice and silky. Then I just clarify once a month.. Stays silky that way :)

Another way would be to get one of those deep conditioners and a plastic cap and a very hot towel. :) Those usually arent too much and you can do it once a week, in a corse of a (few) month(s) it should help it out :)         (depends on your hair)

I would say if you aren't worrying about damage (though that is the wrong attitude towards hair), you should get a straight perm. The more you 'mess' with it, the softer it gets. If you can get a hold of a conditioner by Feria Professional (in any Sally's Beauty Supply or such) called Color Moisturizing Treatment, that stuff works well. Basically, you have to style your hair to soften it. And, use good conditioners and shampoos. Healthy hair is better hair.

Basically you keep it stretched out while it's drying. Sock curling does this, so do large heat-free homemade rollers with orange juice cans, or damp hairbuns.

Hi Crystal,

The best way to have soft hair, in my experience, is to immobilize it. I do this by sock curling after a hairwash (see here) and then applying Giovanni Direct Leave-in. And then I fingercomb my hair the next morning. Or I bind the length straight, using multiple scrunchies, that morning.

I think the key thing is to comb thoroughly and then immobilize the hair while it's still SLIGHTLY damp.

Hope this helps
Anais

hi all,

my name is crystal and i'm new here :) just wanted a bit of advice on how to make my asian hair soft and silky!!  it's too THICK, coarse, heavy and UNstylable!!! and it's almost to my armpits, and straight. i am not looking for anything thats too expensive, and i don't want to go to a salon and swamp my hair in a some crazy chemical concoction. please if you know of any home-made or really easy remedies send me a message!!! also i dont' really care about "damaging" my hair because it will always grow out!!

thanks a lot:)
