QuoteReplyTopic: Protac/acetone takedown nightmare Posted: June 03 2006 at 1:58am
I've taken protacs out of my hair quite a few times with the citrus
remover (from shrinkies.net) and it has always been rather easy.
I've heard from a few people on here that acetone is really great so I
thought I'd give it a try.
I put the acetone on a cotton ball and rubbed it on the protacs.
The protacs ended up breaking down into little balls of super sticky
bubble gum type stuff. The balls held on to my hair like super
glue, and touching them made my fingers so sticky that I couldn't touch
anything without taking it with me. It was awful! I finally
found my bottle of citrus remover and with that and tons of conditioner
I was finally able to get the stuff out of my hair.
It took me forever and made fusion removal look easy and quick.
I've heard from alot of people that the acetone takedown was super easy
but I didn't have luck with it at all. In the future if I use
protacs again I will definitely only use the citrus remover.
Has this happened to anyone else?

Im so sorry to hear of your difficult removal. I just removed mine last night too. I used acetone and the removal was completely done start to finish and mess cleaned up in under 30 minutes.
Here is my procedure with acetone....I put the acetone in a squirt bottle with a small tip. I work row by row keeping the hair all clipped up, starting with the rottom row.
I squirt on the acetone generously (soaking the tape) work it into the weft with my finger tips and within a few seconds it starts to release, slide the weft out and immediately pull the strip of tape off. The strip usually comes off in one or two big pieces. Have paper towels handy. As soon as you pull the strip off (its sticky) wipe your hand and any sticky gunk off with a paper towel.
The key to using acetone is working quickly...or it will get gunky. And you cant use anything to rub the acetone on...or it will do just like you said and turn into little gooey balls. You literally need to pour on the acetone.
i put acetone in a spray bottle and spray the beginning of the track
and peel it up. I continue spraying and peeling and the weft lifts out
very quickly.
Koffee, I'm with you. I think by saturating the pre-tac in acetone (and I mean saturating), you stand a much better chance. I always find that when I use smaller amounts it's never as easy and can get globbier.
Personally, I opt for the soak in conditioner. The night before takedown I spray leave in conditioner onto the pro-tac and the next day I soak it in a creamy conditioner (cheap and cheerful one) whilst in the shower.
Acetone is a quick remover for me. My only complaint (and it's a
biggie) is that it totally ruins your nail polish. Cours last
time i had Opi polish put on and i notice that doesn't remove as
easily when taking my hair down w/ acetone.
Hey, i know, i should be wearing gloves anyway when using acetone.. but that's too much trouble..
