QuoteReplyTopic: Colouring extensions with salon colour Q's Posted: June 18 2006 at 6:03am
Ok, instead of trying to match the blondes im thinking i might just get the lightest extensions i can get(white) and colour them with blonde colours.
Do you think this would work? Id be using Joico verocolour.
Technically i wouldnt be lightening the hair because id be using blonde colours darker than the colour of the extensions, but im concerned about how well the extensions would absorb the colour? and whether it would leave them strawlike?
i *think* that all extension hair is given a protactive coating that will need to be gotten around. also, the hair is already heavily processed to get it that particular shade, dying it further will probably shorten it's lifespan. remember, most of this hair comes from natural brunettes (asian, indian) whose hair is naturally resistant to dyes. i'd recommend going with as close to as close a match as possible. if your putting down $150+ on human hair, you probably don't want to kill it right out of the package :P
what I'm wearing: 1 pkg 18" DLux SS #2 and protac

I have colored hair darker, and alot of people do it successfully. But MissLou is right, when you buy hair that is light blonde it is already highly processed and anything you do to it chemically is going to have some effect on the quality. The only time I color hair is when its the last resort.
Also you never know how the hair is going to take the color. You can do a test strand and have it turn out one color and then you can follow the same timing and it turns out different. I have even seen varied colors on the same weft of hair.
I'm not an expert in this area at all, but I just wanted to mention that I was at my salon getting my roots touched up about a month ago and a young gal had dropped off some level 9 human hair to be toned to better match her own hair colour. It didn't turn out as they had hoped and I heard them mentioning that it was almost as if the extension hair sucked up the toner colour far quicker than they would ever have expected.
I just thought I'd mention it because like the others have posted, it would be awful to have you spend good money on high quality hair only to have it ruined.

I successfully colored the Bohyme color 27/613 (very yellow) to a nice light pastel blonde. I used a color on some hair, and a toner on some other. The color with the 20 volume worked much better, and I left it on about 5-10 minutes and the color took wonderful and I'm still wearing the hair and this has been about 2 months. I haven't had any problems with the hair at all, and I did add some other undyed hair in with the sew-in install and I can't really notice a difference in either.
I don't know about other brands, but I give the coloring of Bohyme a thumbs up!!!!
Wearing 22" 8oz Tease I tips installed with silicone microrings.
