QuoteReplyTopic: Orange highlights...help! Posted: August 19 2006 at 1:05am
I know, nothing new. I posted something like this a while back. Well I had my hilites done at another place, got a color and cut to a total of $135 (that was w/ a discount).
Well this colorist girl is the "senior colorist" at the place so I trusted her. I wanted blonde and brown hilites. My hair is naturally dark brown-med. brown and I look terrible with any red/orange in my hair. Well, just like I feared, the "brown" hilites are orange. She said it looked pretty and said they were just "warm brown"...uhh, no! I think she lifted both colors and maybe deposited brown on one color (the brown)...she had two mixing bowls and was using them both while coloring my hair.
Now, for my hair, wouldnt you need to lift ALL THE WAY to blonde, THEN put an ash light brown OVER the blonde? Otherwise you'd get red? I tried to tell her this really nicely and didnt want to get all upset. I've already called back and left a message that I wanted her to re-do the brown ones. I know it would be difficult isolating them but I thought maybe foiling the blonde ones to cover them up, then foiling and LIFTING the "brown" ones to blonde, then taking the lifted foils out and putting a brown color on top of the new lifted hair and the rest of my untouched hair (this way, nothing will get on the blonde hilites, since they're covered..I hope you can follow this?), thus getting the right color.
What do you color experts think?
I swear there has been NO time when I was really happy with a coloring from a stylist b/c this crap always happens! >:(
Thankyou!

Just go over the orange streaks with a blue based brown. Blue cancels out orange. If u use a neutral it will still have that hint of gold or yellow. and use something to protect the blonde. Like colestra, or barrer cream.

Well since I cannot really do it myself, or trust myself to do it right, I went back to her and she put something on the "brown" hilites, then put a few dark streaks inbetween to make the brown ones pop more. What she put on was supposed to tone them down. And I know about the blue/orange thing but this girl does her thing and I cannot talk her into something. I'm guessing she used some kind of blue based color on them, however they still look orange-ish to me, esp. next to my dark natural color. I cannot tell if my natural color is ashy, neutral or what. I dont think its warm.
I tried to tell her to lift them to blonde first and then deposit brown but she said something like it damaging my hair...she is foreign...she can speak english but I dont think she knows exactly how to explain something.
They look ok I guess. She thinks they look pretty. I will see if I can post a pic...I dont know what else to do as far as fixing them. I thought of just lightening the brown pieces to blonde like the others (as Ive done before w/my other stylist b/c she couldn't get it right) and maybe buying some ashy clip on streaks. But then I'd have a lot of blonde in there. I'm just so frustrated. Doing your hair should be fun I thought, not a nightmare every time, while losing over 100 dollars. Uhhhh!!!

Hi . It really leaves you frustrated when you can't explain what you want to a stylist doesn't it. If the "brown" highlights you wanted were darker than your natural colour then there would be need at all to lift to blond first.Permanent tint is perfectly capable of darkening your hair,it's the lightening that requires bleach to lift it.It should have been a simple operation of foiling some in a bleach and some in a permanint ash brown tint.If the "blond" you required was only a couple of tones higher than your natural colour she may have used a high lift tint with a stronger peroxide.Clearly if youve got orange tones she either used a brown with too much red in or youve had tint added to the hair previous to this application ? If youve had the base colour lightened in the past then this can happen.Rather than throwing more tint on and damaging your hair it should be possible to apply a temporary colour that tones out the orange for now and then wait until the hairs stronger before having more lowlights added in a more suitable cool brown tone.

Well my natural color is very dark brown. The brown I had put in is light brown, that looks orange. So I was saying to lift my dark brown to blonde, then put on an ash light brown over the blonde...that way there should be no orange issues. I dont know how else to explain it. I had blonde hilited in before that were very grown out, and, like I said, also some "brown" hilites, that were put in at the same time as the old blonde ones, so they're grown out too.

Ahhh I'm understanding better now. So you needed lift for both highlights.Yes that would explain the "orange".It will often get that brassy colour when you try to lift dark brown hair with bleach. As you say she'd have been better lifting it more and then applying an ash brown tint.I've always suffered with that side effect when ever I've tried to lighten my very dark brown hair before it turned completeley grey.Even if it's tinted with a natural base it still throws up that brassy colour within a few days.Clearly youve got an underlying pigment with red tones like most people with dark brown hair.I'd still try a blue based toner for a few weeks before trying again and this time explain that you want her to lift it and THEN tint it ,but that will cost more.I know she's probably already done this so I guess it's back to the salon in a couple of weeks time.

Ah cool. I'm glad I'm making sense :) I knew I wasn't nuts. But it seems like the stylists don't listen to me. I'm not very firm b/c I'm kinda shy. I'm going to another stylist to see if she can help (and listen!) to me. I used to go to her long time ago but stopped b/c whe she hilited, they would all be too close together and it would look like my whole head changed color!

Well, why are you going back to her? You'd better speak up this time! I'm shy too, but if you don't speak up you'll get walked over time and again. BEFORE they TOUCH your hair make sure they understand EXACTLY what you want. It's hard enough to convey to them what you want without being shy. Take PICTURES along -- that really helps. Show her pictures of what you DO want AND what you DON'T want. Show her some orange and say "I DO NOT want this!" And it doesn't matter is SHE thinks your hair looks pretty if YOU don't like it. They're always going to say that. Tell them you don't want ANY ORANGE in your hair. I always say NO GOLD -- that's pretty cut and dry, I think. If your hair turns orange, they need to leave the bleach in LONGER. I wouldn't tell them HOW to do their job, but I would definitely LET THEM KNOW what you want. Good luck! I know that frustration.

I'm going to the old one b/c she knows me well and will listen a bit more. The current one that gave me the orange I'm not going back to. I also may try another stylist who used to cut my hair (maybe colored) but she's kinda far. Anyway, I did take pics (always do) and if I find a pic that is expressly NOT what I want, I take it too. What's weird is that the first thing that those first 2 stylists did was not lift the brown, even thought they know it leads to orange. I dont get it...why do they do that? Is it faster? Then EVERY damn time I have to look all pushy by telling them what to do...I hate that and I hate being put in that position. Ahhhh! Maybe I'll try to grow another arm and do it my damn self! **sorry** If anyone knows a good colorist in IL, let me know! Thanks
