QuoteReplyTopic: take them out or leave them in? Posted: September 27 2006 at 5:13pm
I'm getting a nose job next Wednesday and I'm just now thinking about what I'm going to do with my hair the day of the surgery. If I take my extensions out, I probably won't feel up to putting them back in for a couple of weeks after. so maybe I should keep them in? Anyone who has had surgery, what did you do?
I am also panicking about something else - I've been reading on some of the plastic surgery boards about people losing their hair due to surgery. I've lost enough hair in my life (which is why I wear extensions in the first place) and I don't want to go through it again! I've posted about this before and most of the replies said it didn't happen to them. I hope that's the case for me.

Hey Lynn YAY for the nose job! im getting mine redone at some stage next year hopefully =) i didnt have extensions at the time but i did have very long hair and i just tied it up. I dare say if you keep it in a tight braid it will fine for the 2-3 days you really dont want to do anything.
I would have to say the anaesthetic (sp) did make me lose hair, but not a heck of a lot and it stopped after 6 months post surgery. It might affect you, but it might not. Best thing to do is take a multivitamin daily which may help counteract any hair loss. Goodluck =) make sure you take before and after pics of your nose!!

I had cosmetic surgery also in may and its no problem. they leave your hair loose during surgery anyway and put a surgical cap on you while they operate.
The hair loss from surgery is really rare. Ive been under anasthetic 9 or 10 times in my life for long operations and ive never had any problem.
Im not a doctor but il make a point that you lose blood during operations, and anemia can make u lose your hair. Maybe some of these peoples hair loss is partly down to that?

I turned 50 this year and had that fun procedure you're supposed to have at this age. I had it with anesthetic (procedure was a breeze, by the way) and kept in my extensions. The only thing I worried about was whether my bonds would show while I was under! No hair loss after, that I could notice.
oh my gosh...thanks everyone. I feel soooo much better now, before I really was freaking out! I am actually thinking about taking the wefts out and sewing on some clips, so that I don't have to deal with the maintenance while I'm recovering and when I go back to work I can just clip them in until I have the strength to do a full install.

I don't have extentions but did have a nose job 3 years ago. The only day I didn't feel like doing anything to my hair was the next day (and of course the day of the surgery). But recovery was super fast. As a matter of fact, the only time I experience pain was when I was coming out of the anesthesia. The pain lasted from the time they rolled me out of the operation room to my room. About 5 minutes later a nurse came in and gave me what I assume was a sedative, because after that I went rigth to sleep. And when I woke up, I no longer had any pain in my nose and never again felt pain (except for the time my sister and I had to share a bed, about 2 1/2 weeks after the surgery, and she went to roll over and hit my nose with her elbow...Yes I saw stars. Oh, and when my boyfriend went to give me a tap kiss and hit my nose with his. That hurt like hell). But other than those two occasions, if it wasn't for the cast on my nose, I wouldn't have even know I had a nose job. The only way I would feel pain or discomfort was if I accidentaly pressed my face against the pillow or something. But I was up an about with a couple of days. And I didn't loose any hair. At least not that I could tell.
Now, I did have my surgery in the Dominican Republic, and I don't know if they follow the same procedures here. And on my surgery there was no outside cutting, since all they were doing was narrowing the bone a little. I don't know if the recovery time is more intense for people who are actually getting cuts to remove skin. However they did brake the bones in my nose to be able to make the bridge narrower. That has got to be more painful that small cuts on the outside. So don't worry, I don't think you are going to be feeling bad enough not to do your hair for too long. So keep your extensions girl.
I hope your nose comes out beautifull. Best of whishes
i have heard that you can loose hair after anesthetic, but i have been under a few times and had no problem. i think everyone is different though. the same as pregnancy. some people need to take there hair extensions out because they go through hair loss, other have there hair grow faster. good luck with you surgery. i hope all goes well!
i never experienced hair loss from the anesthesia, however my hair was real dry and felt weird for about 3 weeks, do some deep conditioning when u are through and able, other then that - good luck and heal good- drinks lots and lots of water, and take some arnica- its for bruising and swelling, it helps like a charm. sold in health food stores.
Tangles, I used the arnica for brusing from costemtic surgery. You're right it works really well.
The only advice I have is to put the extensions in a braid. It's very interesting how well braids work as far as no tangleing. A ponytail doesn't work, it must be in a braid.
