About to thin my own hair, any tips? (I'm a male)

   I just bought a pair of thinning scissors, the ones that look like a comb on one side. I got sick of paying $50 every 3 weeks to go to the hairdresser just to thin out or shorten my sides, because i'm an asian guy and i have that problem of the sides sticking out when they get too long

if anyone could provide me with any tips/instructions or web sites that will provide me with instructions on how to do it properly, that'd be great! i know there is a proper technique involved in cutting/thinning hair and i shouldn't just snip it or hack through it, so anything would be greatly appreciated thanks!
