QuoteReplyTopic: Question for Amm on Elite Thermo & protac Posted: November 02 2006 at 1:45am
Hi Amm,
I have read a lot of your previous posts and have learned so much. Thanks for all the knowledge you contribute to this board!
I am about to order and do my first self install using Protac and Elite Thermofiber (from shrinkies.net) and I was hoping you could help me with some questions, please? I have read so much that I'm confused and you seem to be the expert!
1. What is the best remover for protac tape?....some say acetone, some say orange oil and some say olive oil!
2. What is the best product to use to condition the elite thermo? .....Some say neatrogena, some say creme of nature, some say pureology!
3. What is the best way to keep the ends of elite thermo from "frying"? Yours seem to hold up and still look beautiful after 6 weeks, but some have reported frying on the board.
4. What is the best shampoo to use to prevent slippage?
and Finally...
5. My hair is about a level 4 brown right now. Elite Thermo is not available in #5 so I was thinking of buying a #3 and #5/9 blend and mixing them. Does this sound like a good choice?
Thanks so so much for any help you can give me on these!!!

I really think it's all what personally works for you, I've tried all 3, plus conditioner, and a few other removers, and olive oil just works the best for me. Somethings works better for others. I think there's no right or wrong there, just what cooks your noodle!!

Again, I think it's personal thing. I am not sure, and AMM will correct me if I am wrong, but I think with synthetics, since they aren't real hair, I don't think conditioner matters, I don't condition my wawa really, I just use steam and stuff to make it soft and silky, but I am not sure on that!

I will let her chime in here!!

I've found personally, anything that isn't really moisturizing, for some reason, I find all the moisturizing shampoos lead to slippage a little faster.
and Finally...

Again, I will let her chime in, because I don't know much about the colors! Goodluck with everything though!
Thanks so so much for any help you can give me on these!!!
1) For me, it's the citrus adhesive remover. I put it in a small squeeze bottle with a pointed applicator tip and use maybe all of 1oz. I've tried conditioners some reported make them slip out and they won't budge for me. I've tried acetone and will never attempt it again. The acetone dissipates too quickly, the fumes were overwhelming, and the weft hair came out but the tape stuck. Big gummy tape boogers stuck in my hair. It was horrors getting it out.
2) Neutrogena Triple Moisture. The other two you mentioned are ok but aren't nearly as thick and creamy. They don't make my hair as nice.
3) Instructions are included on taking care of the ends. What's written is exactly what I personally do. It's not anything high maintenance at all. I do not use hot rollers. Ever. I only use a metal curling iron while the hair is wet and never tong the ends. Once/twice a week washing and curling is enough and not overstressing. Anything else is going against the care advice and not what I do to lengthen the fiber's lifespan. I personally also have a calf-length silk sock that I've cut the foot out of. I loosely braid at night and pull the pony through and band it at the top and the bottom. Silk pillowcases always end up on the floor for me so I do this instead to keep my hair from rubbing at night.
4) Neutrogena Triple Creme turned into my shampoo of choice with all my extensions. I'll use an Oatmeal, Milk & Honey shampoo bar that I make but I mostly stick with the Neutrogena. I only wash my hair left out on top allowing the lather to "rinse wash" on the way down. Shampoo cream itself has never been on my bond area, only the rinsing lather. I'll squeeze the lather into the extension length and fingercomb wash the nape area. Shampoo on what actually works "best" is subjective but this is my choice of shampoos.
** My hair never hangs down the back during showering, filled with water and pulling. I always sweep the length forward on one side or divide in the back ponytail style and bring it forward. This is a must for all long hair wearers.
If you have a digital scale at home, do this test... Take 4oz of hair and thoroughly saturate with water like it is during washing and then put it on the scale. It weighs an astonishing 12oz. (And that's just one weft!) This is 3x the weight now pulling at the tapes. Add creamy shampoos and conditioners to the attachment area and, yes, it will indeed shorten the life of the install, lift tape ends, etc. Always bring long hair forward and allow your shoulders to support the weight of it, not the attachment area.
** I also use a Mason Pearson C7 comb. They run about $25-$30. These combs are rounded, entirely seamless so there's nothing on the inside scraping against hair or fiber extensions. Worth every penny, imo. Guard it with your life. Spouses, friends, etc will attempt to get this comb from you.
5) Don't get the #3 is you're a #4. #5 in the thermo is almost an exact match to color ring #4 but there's no warm tones. If you need that, the #5/9 blend may be able to match. Hard to know without seeing your hair in person. I do have #5 in stock but don't have it listed right now so email me if you'd like it. If you have hair you'd like me to match or if you'd like to see the two colors before a purchase, I gladly send out loose bulk samples to help individual color matching.
