I color treat my hair and that is something I'm not sure I can give up.  But I had a thought today.  What if I only color treated the top layer near the part and the front layer around the face?  Could I get by with doing a individual strand technique or protac? which sounds interesting to avoid the rice grain shows....and NOT coloring the rest of my head if the extensions match my "colored" hair so that it blended?

For more info, I lighten my hair from a med dishwater blond to a blend of light copper gold/turmaline using 20 vol peroxide.

I was thinking of just getting some clip ins, maybe start cheap like the Jessica Simpson Hairdo ones or something...but I'm also concerned that I've been swimming alot and the combo of growing my hair out (past shoulder length now), a couple of months ago getting a trim and blow out that was NOT skilled (too high of heat fried the ends), and the color itself once every month is starting to have breaking pieces and fried ends.  I may go get about 2 inches trimmed off in any case to get the bottom in gear.

Can I swim with extensions and if I do, would it be better to get synthetic?

My hair is fine and mostly stick straight.

What do you experts think?

Thanks!
Stacey

you can color your hair and still use hair extensions. Alot of us do it. You can swim with hair extensions human or synthetic. You just need to take certain care precautions. Like putting your hair in a braid when swimming, Some people coat their hair with conditioner. Rinse after swimming, and drying the bond area at least, after swinmming. You dont want the bonds to be left wet for long periods of time.

I guess I'm mostly afraid of increased breakage since my hair already seems a bit damaged from chlorine and coloring (I need some good ideas on repairing that--use deep conditioning and protein packs now but not keeping up with damage).
Do you girls really just color right on top of installs or do you have to remove and start again?

Thanks for the answers.

I dont color while mine are in. I touch up my roots between installs. I use protac so I do a takedown every 5-6 weeks and a retouch at that time. Although I know alot of people do ther roots while extensions are in (like an individual install method that lasts 3 months) You would need to be VERY careful and not get the dye/bleach on the bonds and rinse extremely WELL to make sure no dye/bleach is trapped and left in the bond area, or you could end up with a chemical cut.

If your hair is severely damaged and breaking, you may want to consider cutting out/back on the things that is causing the damage. I quit bleaching sometime ago due to the damage I was doing. I have found a brand of hair dye that I can retouch my roots with every 6 weeks and it isnt as damaging as the bleach and has helped alot. Im not AS light as I used to be, but its close.

Also, if you are already dry and damaged from chlorine, then you may want to consider eliminating the additional chlorine exposure from your tap water, if you are living on city water where chlorine is added. If you dont have a water sofetner then I would suggest buying an inexpensive shower filter. (they say there is MORE chlorine in tap water than what is in a swimming pool!)

Good point on the chlorine.  Problem is I'm working overseas in the third world.  There is no tap water and we harvest rain from our roof (strange but fascinating).  So I have a choice of stinky funky water LOL (no we never drink it) which isn't really an option, OR using pool shock type treatments periodically.  I think that is what started damaging my hair when I also started swimming.  Usually I wouldn't swim so much but there isn't much else to do here on the weekend so I go....I need a good chlorine remover and protection product I think.
I'm not THAT damaged.  The ends are friend because I'm in serious need of a good trim and the previous one was both insufficient AND followed by a fry dry.

I'm thinking of getting some of the John Freida color gloss stuff to try to maintain the color a bit longer between touchups, that combod with some chlorine treatment might be all I need, not sure.

Maybe clip in is my best option for now...do you have any opinions on the Hairdo synthetic?  I can't afford the 500 for the human hair right now.

BTW, I've drooled over this board off and on for months and I followed one of your installs, cutting etc.  Very good work.  It looks beautiful.  Is your hair darker than your pic now or is that the darker shade?  Just curious.

Thanks for the help.

Honestly, I think the protac may be less damaging to brittle hair than clip ins, if you are going to wear them daily. If you are only intending to wear occassionally then clip ins may be the way to go.

Yeah I would get a good treatment system going to combat the chlorine. But Im not sure what to suggest for products. Maybe one of the pros will chime in on this. I used to use Malibu treaments.

My hair is really not darker now. Its just not as pale as it used to be when I did bleaching/highlights. It has more gold tones and my roots/underside get a little brassy between touch ups, but the length of my hair stays pretty light. Ive been using a highlift blonde hair dye on my roots that does the job well enough. I dont care for the gold tones and brassy roots after 3/4 weeks but my hair is thanking me for it.

I was a little afraid of that also (putting extensions in color treated hair), but I overcame my fear and did it, two nights ago anyway.

I, like you, was a little timid to do an actual install of extensions using Protac, LG or fusion method.  So instead, I was thinking of buying or making my own clip ins to experiment with.  I asked questions here, and got all my answers from all the friendly informative women on this board.

But... I decided to jump on the bandwagon and move up another level from clip ins.  I did my first install 2 nights ago, after lightly bleaching and coloring my hair.  I used LG and installed wefts, following Sherries tutorial.  (Thanks Sherrie!)  So far, so good.  I don't notice any damage, breakage or shedding.

Your hair will be okay.  Just make sure not to color or bleach while you have the extensions in.  That's a big no-no from what I've been reading.  Good luck!
